April 25, 2014: Sox Fan Envy?

posted in: Blackhawks, Cubs, White Sox | 0

As I sit here a day after the Cubs anniversary meltdown, and watch the baseball teams on both sides of town lose again, I go back to the end of the Hawks Game 4 OT victory over the Blues.  As I’m talking with my brother on the phone in celebration, I’m also texting a friend.  As he sends me the text after the Hawks win, he says “88!” and then “5 runs in the 9th!”  Why in the middle of a load of relief and celebration would he go there?  Why after the Hawks win finally allowed me to breathe again after the Bulls went down 0-2 and the Cubs had another epic meltdown, would he bring that up… now?  I’ll tell you why… because that’s how Sox fans are… and this is how a 30 minute argument via text message is started.

Why do Sox fans hate the Cubs so much?  Let me take some guesses…

Is it because the Cubs play in a shrine?  Let’s face it, although “the Cell” has improved over the years, and has come a long way from that 1st opening day, it is, and never will be, Wrigley.  My friend stresses to this day that he will NEVER set foot in Wrigley, I can only assume, because of the hate.  It’s ashamed really, that he will never experience the baseball cathedral, but that’s only because he may like it, and I’m sure there are many Sox fans in that same boat.

Is it because the Cubs fans come out win or lose?  OK, let me rephrase that, is it because the Cubs fans come out period.  Sox have always had trouble in attendance.  I mean, even when they’re winning, they have a hard time drawing.  Meanwhile, us Cubs fans herd to the ballpark every day to support our eternally losing baseball team.  (And I know what comes next… Cubs fans are only there to drink and party and don’t pay attention to the game?  And Sox fans don’t?  Couple differences…. Sox fans tailgate, while Cubs fans hit one of the 100 bars surrounding Wrigley.  And one more thing, we don’t run on the field to beat up umpires in our drunken stupor)

Is it because the Cubs are loved nationwide?  OK, we have a lot of “fans”… OK maybe a bunch of bandwagoners over the years, but how is that the Cubs fault.  I’m sure the Sox have picked up a % of bandwagon fans with the #1 Sox fan being our President.  Let me tell you… every true baseball fan that is not a Sox or Cardinal fan will be celebrating when our day comes.

Is it because the Sox, no matter what they do, will always be second fiddle in this town?  Let me start off with , I’m sorry.  It’s not my fault that this is the way it is… it just is.  Deal with it!

Towards the middle of our text war, he brings up 2005… a year I have erased from my memory.  In fact, did that year ever happen?  Well it did, and he told me to read the paper from that year.  I told him to read it… and read it again.  Cherish it!  This is essentially why I don’t understand all the Sox fan hate for the Cubs.  You have your ONE!  Enjoy it, and stop worrying about what the Cubs are doing.  I will patiently wait (OK not patiently), anxiously wait for that day.  When it happens, it will be bigger than anything we’ve ever seen in sports.  When it happens, the Sox should finally get up and move to Indiana.
