April 27, 2014: Football in April

posted in: Bears, Cubs, White Sox | 0

It’s the day between playoff games for the Bulls and Blackhawks, and with nothing else going on, it’s time to talk a little Bear football.  (I know baseball is going on.  I don’t care if I buy into the plan, and am trying to be patient, losing sucks, and the Cubs have been doing a whole lot of that.  For the record, I do think that both the Cubs and the Sox, yes the Sox, will do a little better than expected.  The Cubs have had a lot of close games go against them, while the Sox offense should be able to win some games for them.  I’m projecting 70 wins for the Cubs, and 75 for the Sox.)

So the NFL schedule is out, and I think everybody likes to review it and mark a W or an L next to each game in an attempt to predict DA Bears record.  I’m the same way, so that’s what we’ll do.  I’ll go through game by game with a brief comment:

  • Week 1 vs Buffalo:                  W                            It’s Buffalo for God’s sake. It’s our home opener. Lock it in.
  • Week 2 at San Fran:                L                            1st game in the new 49er stadium. Still have bad memories from the 1st time we saw Kapernick.  Never play well in Frisco, don’t think the new stadium will change our luck.  Plus, it’s in primetime on Sunday night.Frisco,

  • Week 3 at NYJ:                          L                              A game most will pick as a W. It’s Monday Night Football, and I just think we lay an egg here. Maybe looking ahead to our next game?

  • Week 4 vs GB:                          W                            Let’s start off with saying I hate Green Bay. I used to be in a confidence pool every week, and would pick against them every week just based on principle. Needless to say, I didn’t do so well.
  • Week 5 at Car:                           W                            Bears hit their 1st winning streak, and look to get on a roll.
  • Week 6 at Atl:                            W                            Get to see Devin Hester. I wish they would have signed him for cheap so he could get the record in a Bears uni.   I know he’s been really bad, but still.
  • Week 7 vs Mia:                          W                               4 in a row, and we’re talking Super Bowl!
  • Week 8 at NE:                            L                              Pats are still the Pats, and at home, they’re still tough.
  • Week 9 BYE                                                                                5-3 at the Bye Week. Let’s stay healthy boys.
  • Week 10 at GB:                         W                            See Week 4 above.
  • Week 11 vs Min:                       W                            Let’s take care of our division home games please.
  • Week 12 vs TB:                          L                              The return of Lovie. Great week of hype leading up to the game. I don’t hate Lovie. It was time to move on,  but he gets a little payback here.
  • Week 13 at Det:                        W                            Happy Thanksgiving to these annual turkeys.
  • Week 14 vs Dal:                        W                            The most overrated team in the NFL every year.
  • Week 15 vs NO:                        W                            Yes. The Saints outdoor on Monday Night Football in Chicago in December. Enough said.
  • Week 16 vs Det:                       L                              Detroit gets a little payback for us ruining their holiday.
  • Week 17 at Min:                       W                            End the year with a tough road victory.

That’s an 11-5 record by my count.  Good enough to win the division?  Yeah, I think so.  Good enough for a bye week?  I’m not sure.  I like what the Bears are doing:  rebuilding that awful defense, while the offense will continue to get better (right?).  I saw improvements with Cutler last year… in his attitude.  Everybody talks about pouty Jay and they are right.  He’s a little whiny B.  He wasn’t so whiny last year.  Is that because of Trestman?  I don’t know, but he can’t be like that… not on the field on Sundays.  We need somebody who will lead us through adversity, pat someone on the back when they screw up, and keep this ship going forward.  I’ve never been a huge fan of Cutler (I loved when we got him), but if he can improve with his leadership on the field, and limit his mistakes (and stay healthy), I like our chances.

When the Super Bowl rolls around, it will be 29 years since the Bears won it.  I still remember that Super Bowl like it was yesterday, and I was only 9 years old.  I remember almost every week of the season, and of course, each playoff game.  (I got a little refresher when I purchased the entire 85 season on DVD… awesome!)  There will never be another team like that, and we shouldn’t expect that.  Whenever the Bears win it again, it will be totally different, and that’s OK.  It will still be as sweet as ever, regardless of the makeup of the team and how we do it.  It’s fun to look ahead, as we sit here and talk football in April.  It’s really fun when expectations are this high.  Bear down baby, bear down.
