April 30, 2014: Silver Lining

posted in: Bulls | 0

Wow… tough way to go out.  In a series I thought was going to be the total opposite, the Wizards knocked out our Bulls last night in a 4-1 series win.  Being there only made it worse.  The slow start, the comeback in the 2nd, the horrible 3rd quarter, the Taj injury, the last ditch effort, and finally, the painful loss ended the roller coaster ride.  In this season ending loss, and all the tough fan moments, I always try to look for that silver lining.

There is a lot of silver lining actually; the first one being the end of Carlos Boozer’s career as a Bull.  There is no way (right?) that the Bulls bring him back.  Can you say AMNESTY?  Besides a short time in Game 3, Boozer was horrible this series.  The thing I can’t understand is how after 4 years of playing under one of the best defensive minds in the NBA that you still can’t play defense.  Whenever Boozer was in the game, and Taj was not, there was no fear for these guys to drive to the hole.  Boozer would just stand there while Taj would swat them out.  Another thing… why does the only time he ever get a rebound is if it falls right in his lap?  There were 3 offensive rebounds in a row by the Wizards late 4th quarter.  Jump in there any time Carlos!  You’re out there in the 4th quarter (because of Taj’s injury) and this is what you do?  There is a reason Thibs never put you out there in the 4th.  And another thing… how annoying is it when he’s constantly screaming stuff after he makes one basket… or when he pulls the net after a timeout or before someone shoots a free throw.  Good riddance Carlos!

Thankfully, this season is over; and that’s the 2nd silver lining.  Wait, I’ll explain.  Ever since2 years ago in the playoffs against Philly, it’s been tough sledding for the Bulls and their fans.  To see Derrick Rose go down like that, and destroy all our hopes of beating Miami and winning the NBA finals that year after a 2nd straight year of finishing with the best record in the East, was devastating.  Then, to have him out the ENTIRE NEXT YEAR!!!  Yet, this Bulls team made the playoffs and beat Brooklyn in an awesome series, only to come up short vs the Heat.  You try beating the Heat without YOUR best player!  Then this year rolls around, and man was I excited.  Finally, Derrick will be back and this Bulls team will be ready to roll through the year, and meet up and BEAT the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals.  Then, the unthinkable happens… down goes DRose again.  Are you kidding me???  Then, we trade one of our remaining best players Luol Deng.  Yet, we STILL make the playoffs.  I know the East isn’t that strong, but you have to be really proud of this team, and the way they battled through the last 2 seasons.  Finally, comes our matchup with the Wizards, and we get stomped.  This 2 year struggle has mercilessly come to an end.  Yeah, I thought we had a chance to do more, but with this team defying odds the past 2 years, it finally caught up to us.  Are we ready to put these struggles behind us?

I sure hope so, and this is why I look forward to the 2014-2015 version of the Bulls.  Just give me one year where we can go fully loaded into the NBA playoffs.  Rose will be back healthy (will he stay healthy?).  Taj will have plenty of time to rest that ankle.  What will we do in the draft?  My idea:  trade both our 1st rounders for a top 5 pick and have that guy be part of the rotation immediately.  Can we really afford two 1st round picks anyways?  Is our European “savior” coming next year?  Does Carmelo really not care about money and sign with us?  Do we keep DJ?  Who else do we add?

I loved this year’s Bulls team.  While the clock expired last night, I stood proudly and cheered.  No, not for the Wizards, but I stood applauding another awesome year by this hard-working, overachieving Bulls team.  I look forward to next year when the reinforcements roll in.  I look forward to getting another shot at the Heat 100% healthy.  I look forward to making that run at our 7th NBA championship.  We’ve paid our dues; it’s time to collect.
