April 5, 2018: On the Sixth Game

posted in: Cubs | 1

It felt good to sit and watch most of the Cubs game tonight.  It felt good to see the Cubs play well.  On the sixth game of the season, the Cubs pounded the Brewers 8-0.

The Brewers aren’t very smart.  It started early.  In the bottom of the 1st inning, after Braun boldly took 2nd base on Lester to get into scoring position with 2 outs, he pressed his luck.  Why not just sit there?  You’re scoring on a base hit.  But no… you had to be Ryan Braun… still cocky after the PEDs, huh?  Yep, he tried to pull the same stunt at third base.  Lester stepped off, and yes, threw the ball to Bryant…and, and… it only took one hop.  Braun was out, and tried to laugh it off, but he really looked like a imbecile.

The next inning was more bizarre play from the Brewers.  With Cubs at 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, the 8th place hitter stepped to the plate.  Now, if I’m coaching, and yes, I know, I’m not a manager… wait a second, yes, I do manage in a 4,5, & 6 year old league… haha.  If I was coaching, I’m putting Baez on… no brainer… to face Lester with the bags juiced and 1 out.  It looked like pitching to him would pay off.  Baez went down 0-2, and then surprisingly took 3 pitches, to take the count to full.  He then lined one up the middle, and the Cubs took the lead 2-0.  Dumb move.

But wait, there’s more… On a shot by Lester up the middle, the 2nd basemen allowed the ball to go right under his glove, throwing away the opportunity at an inning ending double play.  One error on the play quickly became two errors on the same play, when Cain mishandled it in center.  Baez did stop running, but then turned it on, to beat the throw home and give the Cubs a 3-0 lead.  He certainly is an electrifying player.  It was the first time this year I jumped off the sofa…

And the Cubs tacked on, as the mostly Chicago fans rooted them on.  So much for that zip code restriction on online tickets… Teams just don’t get it.  If I were the Brewers, I would look at it like one of the ushers I talked to in Cincinnati the other night did.  “We love your money”.  Damn right.  For teams that struggle to fill their own stadiums, it’s a welcome site to see the Cubs roll through town, because we roll deep.  Yeah, some fans may not like it, but the people in charge do.

As for the grand finale in this mockery of a baseball game the Brewers played, Counsell brought in his closer in a 6-0 ball game.. only to see him go down in a heap on the mound after making a pitch.  Don’t like to see anybody get hurt, but it was quite the fitting ending for this rag tag ball club.

And THIS is supposed to be the team to challenge the Cubs this year?  Yes, it’s early, and maybe I’m just feeling really good after the Cubs finally scored some runs, but the Brewers???  to challenge us???  You must be joking.

17 more games between us will tell that story, but if this first game is any indication, they will be permanently in our rear view mirror, along with the rest of the NL Central.  Nothing beats winning.  Go Cubs!

Nice way to start the 4 game series vs the brewcrew. Cubs starting pitching got their first W of the year as Lester bounced back and pitched a gem with a nice pick off, too…those roids still affecting braun’s oversized noggin! Baez makes plays, offensively, defensively, or on the basepaths that show us why he should be kept…the guy is a magician on the field. Ouch for their closer…tough non-contact injury that will cost him a few months. This will come back to bite the brewcrew in the ass a couple days later. Try to keep Cubs fans from Wrigley north, PLEASE! Cubbies fans roll deep…always have! With this much talent now, you better believe the numbers are only going up. 3 games left vs the brewcrew as well as to finish the 9 game roadie to start the year. Can’t wait for Opening day at Wrigley! GO CUBS GO!!!
