It’s been a while since we’ve last talked… about our newest feature… the 1991 Bulls. Last time we talked, the Bulls had finished off a first round sweep of the New York Knicks. Next up was a match up with the Philadelphia 76ers. Now Philly.
One note before we get going… I liked the Spectrum, the old stadium for those Sixers. It’s not like it was a great place for the Bulls… lots of tough games. I just liked the way the court looked. OK, moving on… to another old stadium that was pretty cool.
The Chicago Stadium is where the next chapter would begin. The Sixers were no slouches. They had beaten the Bulls 3 out of 4 games during the regular season. Their main star was of course, Charles Barkley. They had some complimentary players, like Hersey Hawkins and Armon Gilliam. They also had a bad boy… we would meet one of them in this series in the form of Rick Mahorn. But this Sixers team would face the same fate as many of the great Eastern Conference teams in the 90s. Charles Barkley would face the same fate as all those great HOFers in the Eastern Conference during the Jordan era. He finally escaped to the Western Conference, where he would make the NBA Finals… only to meet MJ again. Sorry Chuck.
He would come out blazing with 34 points in Game 1, more than anyone else. But the Bulls brought the balanced attack… MJ with 29, Pip with 24, Cartwright with 14, and Grant with 12. The Bulls would win by 13 points, and would take Game 2 by 12 points. Up 2-0 and headed to that Spectrum, the Bulls would drop their first playoff game. 46 points from Jordan were not enough, and the Bulls fell 99-97. See that MJ percentage of his team’s points at almost 50… yeah, not exactly a recipe for success. But no worries… The Bulls would bounce back to take a commanding 3-1 lead with a 16 point win in Game 4 at the Spectrum.

Yeah, we all know… we all knew the higher ranked Celtics wouldn’t be waiting for us. We knew who it would be… it was our destiny.
The Bulls would meet the Pistons again. This time would be different, right? Surely with the home court advantage, the Bulls would be able to finally oust their rivals.
This is what it was all about. The entire year… heck, the entire last few years led up to this point. It was the true crossroads. Lose and how would history have changed? It was a nerve wracking time, i remember that. The hate was at full force. The Pistons were Public Enemy #1, and we had another date with them. I just can’t wait to write the next part of this feature…

76ers were no match for the Bulls. Sure, they were a good team, but the Bulls were on the cusp of greatness. Barkley, ewing, miller, payton, malone, stockton…6 hall of famers who ran into Jordan and the Bulls and lost…no rings for them…sorry!
Next up, the pistones…this time, at the madhouse on madison! Would this be the year the Bulls got over that hump? Stay tuned, and keep a broom handy!
