August 10, 2017: Back to 35th

posted in: White Sox | 2

For the second time this year, and second straight week, I was back at Comiskey Park III to view a Sox game in person.  This time was the Father’s Day game, which includes my brother, brother in law, and dad; it’s becoming a bit of a tradition now.

Then we attended many Sox games.  As we headed back to 35th, I remembered some of them…

Walking under that bridge on 35th street after the games was memorable.  I’m not sure exactly when the bucket boys officially became the bucket boys, but there was always somebody banging on something under that bridge.  It’s a bit brighter nowadays, but that sound still echoes throughout.  It was especially fun after a Sox win, when we would chant na-na-na-na as we walked through the tunnel; we didn’t sing that yesterday.

Yeah, and there were some memorable games in the old Comiskey, like the one where we were in left field, trying to catch a batting practice home run by either Canseco or McGwire; I didn’t get any.  Then there was the game we ended up talking with Ron Kittle in left field, through the netting of the patio I believe; that was pretty cool.  Then that Thursday night game where we watched the Sox against the Angels, while they showed the Bears-Vikings highlights on the big screen; you know, THAT Bears Vikings game from 1985.  Then of course all the firework nights; a definite perk at Sox games.

Last year, in year 1 of this new tradition, we saw Miguel Gonzalez shut down the Yankees in a Sox victory.  This year, it was Miguel again, shutting down the Astros, as the Sox pounded them 7-1.  It was the likes of Anderson and Delmonico who led the way on this evening; yes, the Sox may suck now, but in a couple years, the park may be a bit fuller than it was on this evening.

Yet, there were still some people checking for tickets as we roamed around the lower level.  From the 4th row in left field, right around where that Anderson homer came down, to behind the Sox dugout, to down the left field line, we enjoyed the view from many different areas.  That was another great part about the old Comiskey.  Checking tickets?  Yeah right.  Who cared about that, after it got to about the 6th inning and the place was half empty.  As kids, we went wherever the hell we wanted, lots of time ending up a couple rows off the field.  I miss those days.  Now, the only way to get that close is to actually pay for those tickets… go figure.

At the end of the day, or night in this case, it wasn’t so much about the game we were watching, but the people that I was with.  It’s always that time spent together that counts; that time that will always be cherished… that and the Ricobene’s sandwich before the game.  My wife said, we just ate there last week, to which I responded:  I used to order from there every day!  Oh, and the dollar dogs… yeah, that was good too…

Our yearly visit to CP3 resulted in another white sox winner. We seem to be a lucky charm for the sox and especially miguel gonzalez, who got the win after pitching 8 strong. 2 years in a row and he pitches when we’re there. The original CP was lots of fun when we were kids. We would always go to more sox games than Cubs. It was closer and cheaper. Plus, they had fireworks! That was and still is a highlight for sox games. The walk through the dark tunnel on 35th and singing after a sox victory was cool, too. Now it is like you’re under a microscope with all the bright lights. The bucket boys keep it loud and provide some entertainment. As far as checking tickets, I guess it is needed to try to avoid clowns getting on the field and beating up umps…hahaha. Still seems kind of ridiculous when the park is half empty, and even more so later in the game. Oh well, Ricobenes before the game, dollar dogs during the game, and plenty of good company make this a night to look forward to every year. Let’s keep it going boys!

Like always, the company was the best part…… Always a good time when the 4 of us get together. Sox game, golf trip, Cub game, movie and ‘cocktails’, all really good things made better by the company WE keep. Check the schedule and rotation for next season so we can make sure Gonzalez is pitching again! And maybe try for another Dollar Dog nite! That part was really good, until Thursday morning……..
    Thanx again boys.
