August 13, 2014: Sleeperville

posted in: Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox | 3

Let’s keep this fantasy talk going…  I’m going to talk about some sleepers.  Some of these guys are popular sleeper names getting thrown out, while others may be personal sleepers of mine.  There are other deep sleepers of mine that will NOT be mentioned… although maybe I throw a few out there.

Let’s start with some QBs…  Ryan Fitzpatrick, Alex Smith, Ryan Tannehill, Teddy Bridgewater, Josh McCown.  If one of these guys is your starting QB in your league, good luck to you.  However, one of these guys may fit a backup role just fine.  You need to account for bye weeks & QB injuries.  The selection of your backup QB may be an important one, although maybe you just prefer to jump on the wire if your guy goes down.  I tried that with RG3 a couple years back when he went down for the fantasy playoffs.  Brandon Weeden was my choice, and I got knocked out of the playoffs.  It may be a worthwhile investment to have a backup QB on your roster, although if he is good enough, you may question starting him instead of your starter, like the year I had both RG3 and Luck.  I had to make decisions based on matchups every week; options are good.  Maybe to play it safe, you just handcuff your stud starting QB, but that leaves you high and dry for the bye week.  I like Fitzpatrick and Tannehill in the above group.  I think Houston may be a sleeper team in general, while nobody really pays attention to the Dolphins, so nobody noticed that Tannehill put up some decent fantasy numbers last year.  I like the Smith/Reid combo, but the WRs are thin.  No clue about Bridgewater, but since he is a rookie in our division, I eliminate him.  As for McCown, he is near and dear to our heart, and while he’ll be playing for our ex-coach down in Tampa, he is not somebody I’m interested in.  I just can’t see him doing as well, plus no more Marshall and Jeffery to throw to.  Although the guy that could make the biggest fantasy jump this year will still be throwing to them…

The RB list contains Andre Ellington, Ben Tate, Rashad Jennings, MJD, and Bishop Sankey.  These guys could all be great fits at RB2… could.  The only guy I really don’t like on this list is Tate.  His injury history scares me, although for the right price, he and just about every other non-Packer in the league could be mine.  I had Ellington and was always pissed off with the platoon system; no more of that could mean good things.  Jennings playing for the Giants has to be an upgrade over the Jags… at least a little one… right?  I’ve never liked MJD, but this year, I may be looking to get me some of that.  Again for the right price, he may be playing for the Chicago Blitz this year.  As far as the Bishop, he wasn’t even listed as #1 on the depth chart to start the preseason, but how much can you really count on Shonn Greene?  He may be a rookie to take a chance on.

At the wideout position, the sleeper five include Emmanuel Sanders, Golden Tate, Rueben Randle, Markus Wheaton, and Kenny Britt.  Do you know which team all these guys play for?  If you don’t, I hope you have some more time before your draft.  Broncos, Lions, Giants, Steelers, and Rams are the teams.  When any WR goes to play with Peyton Manning, they should be on your radar.  The move from Seattle to Detroit should be a good one for Golden.  Rueben Randle has been on the sleeper list for a couple years; is this the guy you were a year early on?  After Antonio Brown, you got Markus Wheaton… Big Ben can’t throw everything to Brown.  And Kenny Britt moves from the Titans to the Rams… I still stay away from him.

Last but not least is the tight end position.  After Jimmy Graham and maybe Gronk, there’s not much separation.  Give me whatever tight end I can get for the cheapest price.  Tyler Eifert, Eric Ebron, Dwayne Allen, Zach Ertz, and Ladarius Green are some names you may want to look into.  I’m not going to tell you anything else about these guys.

So there’s 20 sleeper picks for this year, some trendy, some not.  Don’t worry, I didn’t ruin your draft by talking about these guys; everybody should know about them by draft day.  It’s the guys that I didn’t mention…  If you haven’t heard about Jarvis Landry, Brandin Cooks, or Levine Toilolo, don’t worry about it.  These are the deep variety of sleepers.  However, you may want 2-3 of these guys on your team; you know, the low risk, low dollar, but potential for high reward type guys.  You need to fill those under $5 slots too…  Maybe one of those guys will turn to gold for you.  So do some more research.  We visit Bust City next..
