At the end of the day, you have to be happy with the team you drafted.  You can read all you want, listen to whatever experts you’d like, but when it’s all said and done, you have to mold your team the way you want.  You have to put your personal stamp on your team that will make you a happier GM.

Let me give you some examples.  You need to decide what overall direction you’re going, since you can’t have the top guys in each category.  Do you go top QB/top WR and piece together your RBs?  Maybe you go after 2 stud RBs and worry about the QBs and WRs later.  Or what about that top TE?  You grab Jimmy G and put all your TE worries behind you.  Maybe you want to spend extra money on your defense because you think that matters.  Whichever way you choose, be comfortable with it.  It doesn’t matter what everybody else thinks; it’s YOUR team.  So if you want to spend $150 on 3 players, and piece together the rest of your team, do it!  Your team may suck, but at least you did you.

What about guys you don’t like?  Don’t draft them.  Now this may not always be a winning strategy, but are you going to be able to root for the guys on your team you don’t like? There are certain guys that I don’t like; certain teams that I don’t like.  I avoid them.  Even when I do draft them, I get rid of them.  Example this year in baseball.  I drafted Ryan Braun and Chris Sale.  Now these are both stud players; that’s why I got them.  But as the year went on, I couldn’t find myself to cheer for them; so I traded them.  Now about 3-4 years ago, I had Albert Pujols in his prime… I kept him.  But, for the most part, I don’t like having guys on my team that I can’t cheer for.  This is why I won’t draft any Packers (Or maybe I will and trade them???).  This is why I won’t go after Peyton Manning; I’m just not a fan, plus he beat us in the Super Bowl.  I want to fill my team with MY guys.  I like plenty of great players in the NFL, just not in the Bears division… haha.  I have guys that I’ve had year in year out that have done me good; I will target them.  Then there are guys who’ve burned me… can I forgive and forget?  There are many intangibles that I factor in when making my selections.

Personally, I like to have a balanced/deep team, especially in the NFL.  Injuries WILL happen.  Investing $120 on 2 guys is a very risky proposition.  At the same time, I think I’m good enough to put together a great team with that $80 I have left to spend on 14 players.  Plus, I’m always scouring the waiver wire, and trying to wheel & deal; this is what makes it fun for me.  The draft itself is half the fun of playing in a fantasy league; the rest comes in the week in week out managing of your team.  Because if you can’t have fun with it, then why are you doing it?  Is it strictly business and winning money is your only goal?  Winning is nice; who likes to lose?  Winning money is helpful; who doesn’t need a few extra bucks?  However, you have to enjoy what you’re doing.. at least a little bit.

So don’t go by the book.  Go by YOUR book.  If you want to listen to everybody else, then put it on auto draft; you’ll get the best players available at around their average prices.  If you can’t overspend on a few guys, or invest a little more than you wanted in one of your favorite sleepers, then you’re not doing you.  I watch the Bears every game.  Having a Bears player on my team makes it that much more fun for me.  It helps that there’s some good ones out there this year.  I always try to have one Bear on my team; I will try to continue that tradition this year, because that’s what I do.  Do what you do.  Personalize your team.  Love your team.  Oh yeah, and try to win your league too.
