August 6, 2014: Worth the Wait

posted in: Cubs | 3

It took all year, and it took until the 12th inning last night, but it was worth the wait.  Javier Baez has officially arrived hitting a game-winning home run in his first major league game.

I cannot tell a lie.  I fell asleep.  I was listening & watching to his first 4 ABs, which were strikeout, groundout, strikeout, lineout.  The lineout was mildly exciting, since it was hit almost to the track with the bases loaded.  The last thing I remember is Arenado hitting a HR for the Rockies to tie the game in the 8th I believe (He’s on my fantasy team).  The next thing I remember was 6am this morning when I woke up.  As I came to, I realized that I didn’t see the end of the Cubs game and immediately pulled it up on my phone.  It was like when my son suddenly runs up to us and yells Surprise.  To see the headline that Baez hit a game winning HR was crazy.  This cannot be true.

Maybe this should not have happened…  I was already hyped up enough with his call up, and now this.  So much for tempering the expectations..  Just jump on in Baez, the water is warm.  He didn’t have a great debut, starting off 0-5 with 3 strikeouts, but all that was washed away with one swing of the bat; one game winning swing of the bat.  So I walked my dog, and rushed back inside to flip on the highlights, so I could see this with my own eyes.  A blast to right center field on the first pitch he saw in the 12th was impressive.  Yeah, it’s Coors Field where anybody can hit a HR, and yeah it’s the Rockies who are worse than the Cubs, but damn!  I’m not sure you could have drawn up a better ending.  Now the expectations will rise as high as that home run ball…

I was excited when they went through the starting lineup.  It began Alcantara, Baez, Rizzo, Castro…  This may be the start of the lineup for a long time.  When you add Bryant and Soler, you can plug in anybody with Castillo to finish the lineup; it has the makings of a scary lineup.  The future is here!

OK, yeah, I’m all about believing.  I’m all about expectations, and knowing they’ll have a positive result, especially when it comes to my teams… especially when it comes to the Cubs.  When I saw the headline this morning, it was the first sign of this happening.  Yes, it’s still only game 1 of the Baez era, while the other top guys still have not arrived, but you can start to connect the dots; you can start to see the end game of this plan.  Was all the faith in this plan, all the losing the past 3 years, going to finally pay off?

It’s an exciting time to be a Cubs fan.  The losing wears you down; it is not fun in the least bit.  To actually think of another winning team in Wrigley Field is sweet.  The expectations are going to rise exponentially, and as I mentioned, it’s not going to come down to physical abilities, but mental fortitude that will determine how far this Cubs team can go.  When all is said and done, and all the great prospects are here, and the Cubs are back in the playoffs, it comes down to what’s between the ears.  With that 100 plus year drought all that will be talked about, can they rise above?  Can they rise above and become legends in this city?  Can they become the guys that broke the longest drought in sports?

It’s fun to think about; scary, but fun.  You see how far I can go with this?  One game winning HR and I’m off and running.  Only time will tell, but I’m ready.  I’m ready to see it all unfold.  A game winning home run in a major league debut for one of the most highly anticipated prospects in Cubs history is almost unbelievable.  I can think of something else that would be unbelievable… Worth the Wait will definitely fit that day.

Talk about a 1st game in the big leagues! Starting 0-5 with 3k’s did not shake this kid’s confidence. He heads to the plate in the 12th inning and calmly blasts the 1st pitch into the right center bleachers! Cubs Win, Cubs Win…Holy Cow! How sweet would it be to see so much more of that, especially when it would really matter! Cubs nation has something to be excited about with more to look forward to. Give us a little more hope and anticipation of good things in the future, starting in 2015! GO CUBS GO
