December 15, 2015: The One and Only

posted in: Bears | 1

Here we are… at week 13 of the 1985 NFL regular season.  The Bears, 12-0, travel down to Miami at the Orange Bowl to face the Dolphins.  It was a Monday Night affair of course, and what transpired that night gets me sick to this day.

I captured a lot of this in one of my Hate Files here:  http://www.thelocalsportstalk.com/october-19-2014-the-hate-files-xi/ , but I will go on.  Who saw this coming?  Even the 1972 Dolphins team that celebrates the day every year that the last undefeated NFL team goes down was scared, but their prayers were answered that night by the 85 version of that same team.  Maybe Papa Vegas knew…  Setting the Bears as only a 2 point favorite that night… when the Bears were 12-0… and coming off a 2 week stretch where they outscored their opponents 80-0…  they cleaned up that night, I guarantee that.  Maybe that was the one bone Da Bears had to throw him that year… or maybe it was just a nightmare of a game that couldn’t be stopped.

Steve Garvey & the San Diego Padres were the first to make me cry.  In 1984, when they took the Cubs out, I cried.  Steve and his hairy arms earned himself the 1st Hate File ever… here:  http://www.thelocalsportstalk.com/may-16-2014-the-hate-files/.  Man, I’m really pushing my Hate Files today.  The Packers and the Cardinals followed soon after, where that hate still lives strong today.  But the 2nd specific team that made this young boy cry was the 1985 Dolphins… on December 2nd… 30 years ago.  That Monday nighter where our mighty Bears took one on the chin.

It was supposed to be a perfect season.  We were head and shoulders better than any other team in the NFL, and even 30 years later, are still ranked as one of the best teams in NFL history.  Yet, we had to have one.  When watching the WLS/ABC Channel 7 Janet Davies summary of that 1985 season, Play it Again I think it was called.. you know, the one where they played a song for each week of the season.  Well, for this week, it was … Mama said there’d be days like this, there’d be days like this my Mama said… Mama said, Mama said.

And Mama told me to get to bed… I stood up late to see this game… way past my bedtime.  And for what?  To see some crazy stuff happening, like thrown passes deflecting off helmets into WRs hands for TDs.  How about a 31 point 1st half for the Dolphins?  More points than the Bears gave up in the previous 6 weeks COMBINED!  0, 0, 3, 10, 9,& 7 were the point totals the previous 6 weeks:  29 total!  What the heck was going on here?  There would be no McMahon heroics.  Payton did get his 8th straight 100 yard rushing game which was about the only good thing coming out of this one.  It was a truly depressing night…

I’m sure the Bears were really down on themselves after this game.  I’m sure they were all devastated.  What would they do now?  How can we move on from this?  Well, this 85 Bears team moved on in a way only they could.  Heck, they were still 12-1.  They were still the best team in the NFL, and I guess their confidence was not shaken one bit.  They still had their goal in front of them, and they wanted to talk a little bit about that.

So enough of this week 13 stuff… enough talk about the one blemish… it’s rough enough trying to get through the 2015 Bears season without reminiscing about one fateful week 30 years ago.  There were 18 other much better weeks to discuss that year, and a countless number of years that followed to this day and until I die to celebrate those boys.  Let’s talk about exactly what Da Bears did after that loss…  Let’s start there, next time we walk down memory lane.  And for the record, F the 85 Dolphins one more time and their one lucky week… I was only hoping we would get a chance at payback.  We’d have to settle for our original goal, and that was OK too.  Always Bearing Down!

Would have loved to get some revenge on that miami team in the super bowl, but it was not meant to be since they couldnt hold up their end of that deal. 85 Bears lone blemish was just one of those nights, but they definitely got over it quick and knew what was ahead for them…just made them hungrier!
