December 22, 2015: Confidence

Back we go… 30 years… to the day after the Bears suffered their first loss of the season.  After flying back from Miami, a number of Bears met at a bar… no, not a bar to drown their sorrows, but a studio to record a song.  A song that showed the extreme confidence of this bunch, predicting a Super Bowl in their future.  They knew then, what we soon found out.

Of course Sweetness would point this out in his verse, that the Bears were doing this to feed the needy.  All the proceeds would go to charity.  I know there is still back and forth junk going on about the money surrounding this song all these years later.  It was supposed to all be for charity.  Who really knew how big this song would get…

The almost 7 minute song was nominated for a grammy!  Yeah, THAT big.  They didn’t win it though; they lost to Kiss..haha.  Go figure.  Over 300K did go to charity, while that junk going back and forth as recent as last year, was 6 of the guys trying to make sure that this continued.  Pretty cool stuff.

It’s funny that this was recorded after their first loss…  that was truly looked at as just a speed bump.  I guess being undefeated prior to then through the first 12 games of the year was enough to know where this journey would end.  Unlike many of our stars today, they talked the talk AND walked the walk.  Yes, we still have 3 regular season games to break down, then the playoffs.  A hint for anyone not born yet, or from another city or county, we will not be discussing any more losses.

So the shuffling crew was born.  Sweetness led off.  “They call me Sweetness and I like to dance, running the ball is like making romance”.  That’s gold… solid gold.  Speedy Willie followed with “I’m as smooth as a chocolate swirl, I dance a little funky so watch me girl” as part of his verse.  Samurai Mike ended the first round of individual pieces with “Give me a chance and I’ll rock you good, nobody messin in my neighborhood”.

I almost wanted to just type all the lyrics from memory… I’d probably be pretty close.  After all, this 2 page pullout from the Sun Times hung right above me and my brother’s bed.  Yes, we did say our prayers, but late 1985 and early 1986, it was the Super Bowl shuffle that we recited every night before nodding off to sleep.  It’s pretty much etched in my brain.

Next came the Punky QB, who I dressed up for as Halloween that year.  “I just throw my body all over the field” was very true; unfortunately, somebody else did that too the following year… bastard!  Mama’s Boy Otis came next.  “Some guys are jealous of my style and class, that’s why I dump them on their ass (ass substituted by a foootball whistle of course.)  Steve Fuller played a big part in the season, and was next in this song.  “Bring on Atlanta, bring on Dallas, this is for Mike and Papa Bear Halas”  LA Mike came next; for some reason this is the verse that I remember the least… let me look that up.  OK… “I’m LA Mike and I play it cool, they don’t sneak by me cause I’m no fool”  Who wrote this stuff?!?!  Just awesome…

After another chorus, it was Sackman, Hitman, and the Fridge.  #95 belted out “Sackman’s coming, I’m your man Dent, if your quarterback’s slow, he’s going get bent”.  Then Fencik with “They call me hit man, don’t know what they mean.”  Finally, the Fridge.  “You’re looking at the Fridge, I’m the rookie, I may be large, but I’m no dumb cookie… You seen me hit, you seen me run, when I kick and pass we’ll have more fun”.

So there’s a little taste.. If for some reason you haven’t seen the video, or even if you need a refresher, just YouTube it… please.  This song was just another reason this team became and remains so epic.  “We are the Bears, shuffling crew, shuffling on down, doing it for you.  We’re so bad, we know we’re good, blowing your mind like we knew we would.  You know we’re just struttin for fun, struttin our stuff for everyone.  We’re not here to cause no trouble, we’re just here to do the Super Bowl Shuffle.”  Ahhh… I feel much better now.

When I first saw it, I knew what people were going to think, But you know what, if you don’t think you’re good, then you’re not good; if you don’t think you’re going to win it, then you’re not going to win it. So, I had no problem with their positive mindset. I had no problem with the fun they had making the video. It surprised me because I didn’t know what it was going to be. It was nothing like, ooh, boy, our opponents are going to get motivated when they see this. I don’t care if it motivated our opponents or not. They had to beat us anyway.
