Another Christmas has come and gone.  Did you get what you wanted?

We know better at this point, right?  It’s not about what you want or what you get that makes this time of year so special.  It’s about giving, sharing some nice words, making someone else feel special; I hope you did some of that… I tried to.  I tried to focus on those people who think Christmas is all about what they get; of course I’m talking about the kids.

They don’t know better… yet.  We try to teach them at a very young age that there is more to Christmas than just tearing through dozens of gifts at light speed.  They’ll eventually get it.  But for now, pick up all those wrapping scraps and hope you picked at least one winner to make them happy.  It’s our own damn fault you know.

We give them everything; who wouldn’t do that for your own kid?  Thankfully, we have the means to buy them those dozen plus gifts that I mentioned.  Even if you can’t pile those boxes up, you do everything in your power to spoil the hell out of your kid; that’s what you’re supposed to do, right?

My kid will get everything he wants at this point; well, almost everything.  And then that will turn to him getting everything he needs; that’s a very important difference that I don’t expect him to understand for a while, but something Mom and I will transition to eventually.  And then there will be a point in which he’ll need to get what he wants, but that’s ways away…  At the age of 5, go crazy son; we love you more than anything.

So he did… from my parents’ house to her aunt’s house to her mom’s house to her brother’s house; so thankful we have so many people in our lives that we love; our families who return that love to our family.  We went from stop to stop returning from each with a mini-haul for our boy… and that’s not even counting the pile that was under our tree… the tree in the basement.

He woke up early on Christmas Day; go figure.  He was pounding on my head to wake up about 7am.  As we went downstairs to check what Santa had brought him, there was nothing new; there were only the gifts that were previously under there, only one of which was his.  He looked around, a bit confused.  I asked him if he was sure; he was.  My wife came down the stairs, as we all kind of just stood there for a minute.  Then I said, well what about the tree in the basement?  His eyes lit up with new hope.  As he ran down those stairs, he turned the corner to a mountain of gifts; he began to check each one.  “This one’s for me… and this one… and this one…” he excitedly called out.  I thought, yep my boy, they’re ALL for you.  I got what I wanted for Christmas…

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.

Christmas definitely takes on new meaning when you have kids. It is no longer about what we want, although it is still nice to receive presents of our own. It is the thought that counts. A card, a call, a gift, some kind words. or a thoughtful gesture…any of those will do for me. Our job as parents is to spoil our kids just like we were, and still are, when we were kids. Load up the presents under the tree and watch their faces light up when they awake. The expressions on their faces as they open each one. Yes, Christmas is all about family and kids. Enjoy and count your blessings on Christmas. Be thankful for everything that we get to do and get for each other and our kids. One day, they will learn the lessons about Christmas and have to return the favor. That’s what it is all about. For now, spoil them and keep that Christmas belief alive for as long as possible. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
