December 27, 2014: The Butler Did It

posted in: Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox | 2

This is going to be our first current player inducted into the Players Club.  He has risen his game to new heights for the Chicago Bulls this year, and has given the Bulls their legitimate #2 star… arguably the best player on the Bulls right now, actually I don’t think it’s much of an argument.  Welcome Jimmy Butler.

I think most people know a little bit about this kid’s history.  Father abandoned him as an infant, kicked out of the house by his mother at the age of 13 after she told him “I don’t like the look of you”.  He ends up at Marquette University where he had a very solid, not spectacular college career.  Then the Bulls drafted him at #30 in the first round of the 2011 NBA draft.

As an end of the first round pick, rookie guard, he didn’t play much in the Thibs rotation during that first NBA season.  It was his 2nd year where he started to come on the scene.  It didn’t happen until mid to late in the season, but by the time the playoffs rolled around,  he was starting every game… and it’s been that way ever since.  Known as a defensive specialist, he really did not show substantial offensive skills… consistent offensive skills.  During the 2013-2014 Bulls season, he shot under 40% from the field.  It looked like maybe all he was going to be WAS a defensive specialist.  Or maybe it was that he was getting played too many minutes and just flat out burned out???

Regardless, before the season came, the Bulls and Butler met to try to come up with a contract extension.  It was unsuccessful.  Jimmy was quoted saying he’s betting on himself; Jimmy, you bet on anything else bro?  He’s been an all star thus far this year.

It’s hard to blame the Bulls for not paying him big money before the season.  Who really saw this coming?  I always liked his game.  He’s definitely a Thibs guy, willing to do anything and everything to help his team win, and you have to respect that.  But, I didn’t think he’d be averaging 20+ per game.  He has blossomed into a legitimate superstar.  One that challenges the lead man on this Bulls squad.  One that together with that lead man could lead the Bulls to the promised land.

Jimmy G Buckets, the G stands for Gets, dropped 33 tonight against New Orleans.  He can hit the mid range shot, has a nice post up game, is great running the break, and can hit the occasional three.  Then there’s his defense… I think he’ll be on the NBA all defensive team.  He will be THE key when we meet the Cavs in the playoffs.  Don’t think anybody else will be able to guard LBJ.

I just hope Thibs doesn’t burn him out.  With the new found depth, he’s been spreading the minutes around nicely, limiting DRose, Noah, Taj.  He needs to monitor Jimmy too.  He is among the leaders if not THE leader in the NBA in minutes played per game.  This needs to change slowly.  Yeah, I know he’s hot, but we need him 110% come April through June.  He seems invincible out there right now, like he could play EVERY minute, but we all know that is not true.  Everybody has there limit… well, almost everybody.

Another superstar shooting guard in a Chicago Bulls uniform.  At the one game I attended this year, guy next to me was calling Jimmy Butler the next Michael Jordan.  He said that we’d be crazy to let him get away next year.  Well, I agree on one of the points.  I told him to pump the brakes on comparing him to MJ, but agreed that we need to find a way to keep him in a Bulls uniform forever.  I have a suggestion.  Maybe #1 could restructure his contract to allow the Bulls to keep him?  He owes us a little money for all that time he spent away from the game injured.  If he really wants to win an NBA title with his hometown team, he should realize that Jimmy needs to be on this team.  He should realize that we’ve found our superstar, no disrespect to Noah and Gasol, to pair up with him.  We should all be happy we didn’t sign Black Hole Melo, and allowed Buckets to be all he can be.

The contract talk will wait until after this year.  First thing is first, and that is winning an NBA title THIS year…. and THIS year, we have #21 at the SG position.  He’s a worthy entrant into the Players Club.  He will not be sitting at the same table as MJ or Sweetness, although nobody will be.  He will be seated at the table of the top current athletes in Chicago sports.  He belongs there.  Hopefully, he’ll be here for years to come.  Congratulations Jimmy… I like the looks of you.

Really!!! He’s the 1st current star in the Players Club???? Toews, Kane, Sharp, Hossa, and Kieth all with multiple Stanley Cups, Olympic medals, All Star appearances and individual awards with potentially more on the way.

Butler is a good story and becoming a good player, but whats the criteria here? If he stopped playing pro basketball today he’d be completely forgotten in a short time both nationally and locally. He’s arguable not even the best player on a team that’s won nothing, no Olympics, no All Star appearances and he hasn’t sniffed any individual awards. He might not even be a Bull in the near future.
i guess my point is, he’s a good player but how is this guy even remotely close to FIRST current guy in?

He’s the best player on the Bulls right now; that’s why he’s in.

Just feeling this “Club” out right now, but the best current player on each professional team in Chicago will be in.
