December 6, 2017: St. Nick

Does anybody out there celebrate St. Nick’s day?  Today is that day.  Not many of the kids I grew up with celebrated it; not many people that I know today celebrate it.  But we did, and we still do.

My parents would get us up extra early on this day each year so that we could open our gifts before going to school.  The night before we’d all hang up our stockings.  It wasn’t like a Christmas Day haul, but it was a lot more than just candy.  How lucky we were, celebrating this holiday, getting these extra gifts.  How thankful I am for this, among many other things.

Now, with my son, we don’t do it the same; he did celebrate it in school, and he does get a small haul too… from the same St. Nick’s that would hook me up when I was a kid.  Yes, my Mom still prepares a bag for him and all his cousins (and her son and daughter in law too!).  It’s so nice.  We didn’t get up early to tear through them, but waited until after dinner.  Then we all sat at the table to open our St. Nick’s day gifts.  It is still very special.  Thanks Mom & Dad.

Linking this into Chicago sports… let’s hang up those 5 stockings, 1 for each team.  What do you wish for in each of them?  A championship trophy in each is the obvious answer, so we can’t use that.  Everything else is fair game; go!

I’d like to look inside that Cubs stocking and see that bearded fool Jake Arrieta.  I’d like for him to give us that home town discount, and come back for less years.  Let’s keep in mind, those “less years”, is still in that very open window for another Cubs title.  How many other teams can you play for Jake that will give you that type of chance in your remaining years on the mound?

What about that Indian Head stocking?  Geez… I’m sure some people would like to give away some guys in that stocking, like Brent Seabrook for starters.  But what do the Hawks need the most?  Another defender?  Sure, let’s get another big, young, quick D man.

And the Bears?  Well, I think that’s easy.  A whole new coaching staff of course.  Yes, there are some that want to replace Pace, and many that want to get new ownership, but the most realistic outcome is a new coach and staff.  Or maybe you’d rather have another WR in there?  A high draft pick that doesn’t have an injury history maybe?

Last but not least… yeah, they’re least, is the Bulls.  How big of a stocking do we have?  A number one draft pick, a huge FA signing, a new coach, new GMs, and new ownership.  Can I get an Amen?!?!

I ended up getting some peanuts, some tools, and my annual ornament in my stocking/plastic bag this year.  I appreciate it so much.  Now it’s up to St. Nick to make those Chicago sports requests come true?  What are the chances there?  Happy St. Nick’s day!

St. Nick’s is a sweet little appetizer to the Christmas main course. I loved it when I was a kid and still do now. We are lucky to have such great parents that instilled so many holidays and special memories that we now pass along to our kids. Definitely blessed to have the parents we do and cannot thank them enough for everything they continue to do!
As for filling the Chicago sports team stockings, here I go…
Cubs–Jake resigning, which I still believe will happen, along with not trading Baez, Kyle, or Addy.
sox–some of the magic that the young Cubs experienced in 2015, a few years ahead of their curve.
BHawks–special teams magic, both the power play and penalty kill…let’s say top 5 for both by year’s end.
Bears–pink slips for fox and dowell to go along with a big-time receiver.
Bulls–pink slips for garpaxberg to go along with another top 5 pick with a big-time free agent signing soon after.

Come on jolly old St. Nick! Chicago sports teams are waiting!
