So what does a team do to follow up a 44-0 thrashing of the Dallas Cowboys?  Let’s answer that question as we hop back in the time machine; destination Week 12, Soldier Field, vs Atlanta Falcons.

Vegas tried to adjust.  After being 44 points off the week before with their spread, they went big, really big.  The Bears, no secret at this point, were 16 point favorites over the Atlanta Falcons.  It didn’t matter that Jim McMahon was still out with an injury.  It did matter that this defense was 100% healthy and foaming at the mouth.  That plus a certain HOF RB would be more than enough on this day.

Back to that 16 point spread for a second… So if you did think this would be a close game, why not tease it up to 23 points for the Falcons?  That for sure would get you a victory on your card… Not!

36-0 was the outcome of this game; not a bad encore.  So that’s outscoring your opponents 80-0 in a 2 week span; not too shabby.  I wonder what the NFL record is here.  This has to be up there.  The Bears D completed their 2nd shutout of the regular season, which is all they would have until the playoffs of course.  Let’s take a closer look.

Talking about some of those Chicago streaks lately… Walter netted 100 yards on the ground for a 7th straight game… at that point, an NFL record.  He also found paydirt from 40 yards out for the 1st TD of the game.  That would be the 1st of 4 rushing TDs in this game.  The Fridge, Calvin Thomas, and Thomas Sanders were the other scorers in this one.  The defense, that was another story.

119 net yards from scrimmage.  5 more sacks, 2 more picks, and another fumble recovery.  Nice note in this game was the safety recorded by Henry Waechter.  He had half the sacks for the Bears that game, including this 2 pointer.  It’s nice because of when the next time Henry would record a safety.  How else do you land on 46?

80-0 was pretty impressive.  Going back another week, 104-3 over as dominant a 3 game span as you’ll ever see… although that playoff run wasn’t too bad either.  It was on cruise control.  Now at 12-0 with the division title in hand, the Bears were 4 games away from perfection.  If any team could do it, this team could.

Of course, the last team to record this feat was the 1972 Miami Dolphins; they’re still the only team to go through the regular season 16-0 and win a Super Bowl.  This of course was the next stop for the Bears on their 1985 schedule.  Week 13 had the Bears heading down to the Orange Bowl on Monday night to face Marino and the Fins.  Certainly not an unlucky 13th…

Are you ready for what is next?  The quest for perfection vs the team that achieved perfection on Monday Night.  Are you ready to relive that moment?  This is supposed to be a fun trip down memory lane, but it is a full, all inclusive trip, so yes, week 13 will be covered next.  Please read on an empty stomach…

How about these stats for ya???

    3-17 for 16 yards
    5 sacks totaling -38 yards
    Net passing yards of -22
That is what the falcons managed for an entire game!

Think about that for a second before you talk about a better defense than my 85 Bears!

    Bear down 46 style!!!
