December 9, 2017: Trophy Time

posted in: Bulls | 2

It was playoff time for the winless Timber Pups.  I wasn’t even sure if we’d have a playoff game, but this is the 4-6 league, so everybody gets in.   After last week’s loss, and I looked at the schedule, I read the game time as 10:30, which is precisely the time we arrived on Saturday; actually, we arrived about 15 minutes early.

It was cookies with Santa at my son’s school, so we swooped by there first, and he got his picture taken with Santa in his basketball uniform.  We indulged in some cookies too…maybe some extra energy for our final attempt at a win.   My son ate almost a full candy cane too; I didn’t think he’d like that.   We saw a few of his classmates, and we had to jet.

As we walked up to the gym, one of our teammates was walking out; that was kind of strange.  His grandparents I’m assuming told me our game was at 9am; surely that was wrong.   We walked in together to check the schedule, and yes, our game was at 9am.  Ouch.

I felt horrible…a whole year of coaching baseball, a whole year of coaching basketball, many losses, but this would be THE low point.  As the rest of the team piled in, I had to explain what happened.  I apologized over and over.  One of our kids did actually show up at 9am; his dad got a new phone so he couldn’t call me and tell me.   This really sucks.

It’s not that we would have won this final game; we would have played one of the better teams.  More important than that, it was supposed to be our last game together; one more time trying our hardest on the court.   One more time we would put our hands in the middle.  I felt like I let all the kids down.

My son looked up at me with a confused look, then he ran on the court and started shooting around.  I talked to the head guy and explained the mixup.  I can’t believe I did this; it was the Bulls who played at 1030…maybe seeing the Bulls threw me off.  Who the F knows.   Both teams had their full list of players, so there’d be no way we could play.   We did get our trophy presentation.

That salvaged it, just a bit.   To see all the kids get their trophies, including my son running around the gym after receiving his, made me feel a bit better.   Everybody got their pictures too.  I guess it wasn’t a total disaster.

Yes, trophy time bailed my dumb ass out, but it didn’t change the way I felt.  I guess I’ll take this lesson and ensure it never happens again.  Still can’t believe I did that.   But, if they need a coach for the floor hockey season, which is up next, I’ll be there again, hopefully not screwing anything else up.   Until then, thankful for another fun season, and proud of my son for his 2nd trophy; I think I’m going to have to build a shelf for these things…

Ouch! As I was reading, I was laughing and thinking that it is probably ok now, after the fact, but at that time, I’m sure you wouldn’t have appreciated it. Crazy mixup costs the tpups a playoff game, but at least the kids got their trophies. Maybe next year, your roster will be a little more talented so that you can get a real W! On to the next coaching vacancy…good luck!
