So someone finally fired up the stove… With the Cubs signing Yu Darvish for 6 years & 126 million dollars (up to 150M with incentives), the rest of the free agent landscape should take shape. With his dominance over the 2nd half of 2015, a dominance unlike any other in history, along with his no hitters, and big time postseason pitching performances, number 49 will definitely be missed. I wonder why he is not returning to the Cubs.
With the numbers coming in on Darvish, I wonder if we offered the same to Jake. If we did, we obviously know what his response was. If he continues to seek that 200M, we knew all along it wouldn’t work out. The longer he went without signing, the more chance I thought we had to bring him back. But it wasn’t meant to be, and now we say Hello to Yu.
I like Yu too, don’t get me wrong. I think he’s a fine pitcher. I remember how he dominated us in the postseason last year. I also remember how he got touched up in the World Series; I kind of like that. I like that because that’s something that could motivate. Yu could come back better than ever trying to get his team, which will now be the Cubs, back to the World Series, and personally redeem himself. Kind of like Hossa missing out on 2 straight Cups before coming here… But kind of like Hossa, the big question with Yu will be his health. How healthy will this guy be? If he stays on the mound, I really like this deal.

At least we didn’t have to trade any more of our assets; that is a very good thing. So instead of trading for Archer or Cole, we signed a free agent. And instead of reaching for Cobb, whose price kept going up, we went out and signed one of the best 2 guys out there. That’s our Cubs now; that makes me very happy. We want somebody… we get somebody… money is no object… the only thing that matters is winning. I love these Cubs.
NOW the countdown for Spring Training really begins. Lester, Q, Yu, and Hendricks as our top 4…. damn. I’ll take those 4 against any 4 in the majors. The Cubs broke that ice, fired up the stove, and threw down that cash. Now everybody else can proceed and try to stockpile talent to try to get to our level. Cubs did it again; come follow us. Singing Yu is a shot in the arm for the Cubbies! Good move, nice price, although 5 year 100M would have been nicer. I kind of feel bad for Jake, he is looking for money at the wrong time. 200M is not doable anymore, for any team. I think he will end up in the AL, probably Yankees. The Cubs did make one final call to him, before getting Yu which shows respect.
Only one more move is left and that’s the bullpen, never can have too much.

Welcome Yu! Stay healthy, perform, and get the Cubs back to the promised land! 6 years for $126 million seems reasonable, even it if can reach $150 million. Does Jake really want $200 million plus? If so, I’m sorry, that is too much for the Cubs to pay even with his proven pedigree. No hometown discount? No way to work something out? Looks like my feeling of Jake staying is officially gone. He will certainly be missed, and I hope he goes somewhere in the al or anywhere but with a contender or in the nl central. I have to trust that Theo and company did everything they could to get Jake back. When that door closed, it seems that the door to Yu opened up. I am not real sure how I feel about Yu. His stats sure are impressive, but maybe because I really have not seen him pitch too much, I do not think he is a stud. I hope he stays healthy and proves me wrong. Lester, Q, Yu, and Kyle is as formidable a top 4 as you are going to see. The Cubs are serious about getting back to and winning it all. Make them look like geniuses Yu! GO CUBS GO!!!
