February 12, 2018: Spin Trust

posted in: Cubs | 2

And soon after the Yu Darvish deal was complete, the news we were waiting for came.  That news was that Theo talked to Jake last minute, with a similar offer on the table for him, which he turned down.  This made us all feel good.  At least we tried… at least we just didn’t let him walk out the door.  Are you believing it?  What’s your level of spin trust?

Theo had to spin it.  He’s all about being transparent, or so he says.  For the most part, I do see that… for the most part.  There is still a lot of things that we all do not know.  We love to think Theo is on the up and up… which I think would be different than a lot of folks in that position… but is something I do believe.  We love to think that Theo has that love for us, the fans, and grows attached, like us, to our great players.  But at the end of the day, it’s business… and that’s OK.  That’s OK, as long as that business that is the MOST important is what is best for the Cubs.

Signing Jake to 200M dollar contract I do not think would have been the best for the Cubs.  Let’s call it 6 years… that’s 33M per year…. or 12M more per year than we just secured Darvish with.  You don’t like Yu?  I do.  He’s an ace.  To secure an ace, we had to be in the 20M per year range.  That’s what we did, and we got our guy.  Will Jake get his money?

I hope he does… really… just not with the Brewers or Cardinals.  Just like seeing Fowler go to the Red birds, it would be painful to see Jake in the division.  Go East young man… Yankees, Red Sox… and hope you do great… and hope to meet in October… that’s OK.  I just don’t want to be battling against him all year long.  I don’t want any negative feelings to get in the way of the love I have for Jake and all that he did for us.

Was Theo just throwing us the bone we wanted, or did that really happen?  Because now that it has been publically said, the bottom line is, Jake didn’t want to come back here.  He chose money over playing for us for the rest of his career.  Does that make me love him any less?

I understand, everybody has to take care of their family.  I don’t think I’ll ever understand the difference between 20M per year and 30M per year.  But I do wish the best for Jake, and if that’s what he thinks he’s worth, if maximizing that last pay check is the most important thing, if not giving a home town discount and staying with the team where you turned your career around, where you became a legend is NOT the most important thing, then so be it.  To each his own.

We’ll find out any day now… how much Jake will get… where he will be playing.  I wish him the best, I hope he does the same for the Cubs… unless our paths cross.  No hard feelings, right Jake?  Go Cubs!

Theo had to publicly let it be known that he tried to make a deal one last time with Jake. Too many of us fans, myself included, wanted Jake back. So it is good to hear that the Cubs did try with one last effort. It sure seems to point to money, money, and mo’ money for Jake. Who can blame him I guess? As long as he is able to get it from some team. How hurtful will it be if he signs unless for a much similar deal? 6 years, $180 million? I would be pissed then. Yes, Jake is forever etched in our hearts for what he became and did with the Cubs. Winning a title does that. But if he signs for a little bit more than the Yu offer, that would suck. I mean, a hometown discount should have applied. Like you said, with that many millions, what is the real difference between a few? The Cubs made Jake, not the other way around. Yes, he helped the Cubs finally win a title, but he was only a piece. Now that piece is gone and filled in with someone I hope is worth it. Good luck Jake! Hope you do get that big pay day in the $200+ million range so I can feel at peace about signing Yu over you. GO CUBS GO!!!

i liked jake also. and you read/hear many different side to the story of his offer and not signing. i don’t watch the every day, every column, every comment, but did read the one about the generous offer that was made to him. i think jake is full of himself, and wanted more. what i read was that he was holding out for a multiple year deal for 26.5m per year!!!!!!! that might have been the deal he could have inked after the pennant winning year, but not so much after last year. i wish him well, thank him for the pennant year that he was so instrumental in, and will be quite disappointed if he signs elsewhere for the last offer or less.
