February 16, 2018: The First

You always remember the first one…  Well, most of the time I guess.

My son has been in the pool since he was 18 months old.  I loved getting in there with him in our Aqua Babies class… dunking him under water for the first time, watching him blow bubbles, teaching him the scooping motions, and the kicking motions.  I actually miss not getting in there with him for his class.  He progressed to group classes and is now in one on one instruction.  I don’t remember the first time he swam on his own, but I still love watching my 5 year old swim the length of the pool; I love watching him swim the length of the pool with the backstroke too.  Breaststroke is next.  The goal for him now is practicing his form and increasing his speed.  Michael Phelps here we come.

We put him in a bunch of other sporting activities too, but the first league he played in was last year baseball.  I was the coach; we had a ton of fun.  Yet, I don’t remember when he got his first hit, or made his first catch.  He had plenty of both in his first year, a few stand out, but not necessarily his first.  I guess that will come when he gets his first home run… or pitches to get his first win.  Baseball will be starting soon…

Then there was basketball.  I do remember his first shot there.  That was a tough season.  Even with the baskets lowered 2 feet, he still had a tough time getting it up there.  He finally did; I chronicled it here.  It was awesome.  Onto the next season…

And that is our current season, floor hockey.  We’ve started off 3-0; my son has played a little better each game.  He got really close to his first goal last game, but the goalie made a nice save.  In his first night game, how would he fare?  Well, you had to figure since I’m writing this, that he lit the lamp.  He sure did!  His first goal was sliding the puck through the five hole.  The best part about it, selfishly, was once he saw he made the goal and raised his hands, the first person he ran to was me.  I gave him a big high five, and then proceeded to give the rest of the team one.  It was a proud moment for sure.  I went up to the head coach, and told him “you always remember the first one”.  He smiled and shook my hand.

The goal gave us an early 1-0 lead as we looked to keep our undefeated streak alive.  I know it’s supposed to be about what the team does, but not on this day.  It was all about him.  I picked him up after the game, and hugged him again, celebrating our… I mean, his first goal… haha.  It was one for the memory books for sure.

Oh yeah, what happened in the game?  Let’s get to that next.

The lamp has been lit! Congrats to my nephew on his first goal! A 5 holer like Captain Serious…sounds good to me! In life, there are many firsts so it is hard to remember them all, but certain ones definitely stand out above others. Where will this one rank? TBD, but right now, it is a fresh first! Congrats and good luck on many more!
