February 17, 2018: Undefeated No More

It was awesome to see my son score his first goal.  We lead 1-0 at the end of the first period, when my son put on the goalie uniform.  It was kind of appropriate that just after he scored his first goal, that he gave up his first goal in net.  It was laying right at his feet, when they pounced on it, and slammed it home.  1-1.  We had played this team before.

This was the team that jumped out to a 3-0 lead before we stormed back with 5 straight for the win.  They have the most skilled kid in the league on their team.  He’s a little guy, and was knocked down a few times last game, but if this kid gets any space… watch out.  We grabbed the lead back in this one, and lead 2-1 heading to the 3rd period.  We were about 2 minutes away from moving to 4-0…

Then the kid struck.  He had a little space, and flipped it past our goalie to tie the game up.  As the clock ticked down to zero, I wondered what we did.  Was it a tie?  Penalty shots?  The game went to OT, but that didn’t last long.  He struck again, and fired it in from a tough angle.  Our first loss was official.

I noticed before the game that we were actually keeping track of wins and losses in this league.  The previous 4-6 year old leagues of baseball and basketball, every team got the win every game.  But for floor hockey, nope; it was the real deal.  We were tied with another undefeated team before our loss on Friday night.  We would face this undefeated team on Saturday morning.

They had a double header, so I got a little advanced scouting on them in the first game.  I knew by watching them, that this was going to be a dog fight.  I was right.  It was a scoreless first period; lots of great action on both sides.  Our goalie was great, stopping many shots.  These kids were firing them from half court.  We didn’t get much going either.  They had a different strategy.  They stuck their biggest kid right in front of their goalie.  It worked.  As we went to the 2nd period, my son put on the pads.

He got beat on one of those long ones; I don’t think he even saw it.  There were a couple bodies between him and the shooter.  I told him he needed to pay attention, and jump on that puck if need be.  It finally clicked for him.  He got a bunch more chances, and kept it a one goal deficit.  As the third period began, we tied it, and it was set for a great finish.

But, they struck again from long distance, and we went down for the second straight game.  From 3-0 to 3-2 in a matter of 2 days.  So we won’t be sweeping through the league undefeated.  We played the other best 2 teams in the league, and lost.  We were short one of our best players in each of those games, but they were still both instant classics.  The refs were impressed with the quality of each of the games as they asked the parents to give the kids an ovation.  I asked for some good games, I got them.  Time to get back on the winning side.  This is fun stuff.

3-0 to 3-2…all good. Seems like there is some good competition in the league. Sucks to lose games when the team is not at their best (missing players). Should be interesting playing both of these teams again at full strength. Good to hear that games go to ot and not end in a tie…came up on the short end of that one but even with the season series. As for the other game, sounds like some strategy to get around big boy in front of their goalie next time…coaches get the drawing board out…hahaha. Quality of play sounds impressive and should only keep getting better as the season moves along. Hopefully, the Sharks can bounce back from these 2 losses and get back to winning ways next week! GO SHARKS!!!
