February 2, 2016: Super Stars

We made it.  The special feature that took the walk down memory lane arrives at the final game of the 1985 NFL season in this 23rd blog entry.  It’s the Bears Patriots, Super Bowl XX, at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Were you nervous that day?  I’m sure everyone remembers where they were that day; I do.  We were at home, sitting on the floor, gathered around the TV.  It was cold that day… I remember that.  I remember my aunt and mom went shopping earlier in the day, as my uncle joined my dad, brother, sister, and myself in watching all the pre game hype.  This was history.  This was our first Super Bowl.  This memory would stick in my head forever.  I’m glad I can look back and vividly remember it, especially considering the outcome.

It didn’t start out well.  When Walter fumbled, and Tony Franklin gave the Patriots a 3-0 lead, the nerves began.  Yes, my dad told us to calm down, but we were losing.  The Bears just gave up their first points of the playoffs!!!  What’s going on?  There’s no way, right?  There’s no way, right!  From there, it was 44 unanswered points.

Vegas couldn’t set the line high enough… They pegged the Bears as only a 10 point favorite; did they really get even action on that line?  Did they think the game from 4 months ago in week 2 of the season that saw these 2 teams meet was any indication?  That this was going to be closer?  Even that game was 20-7.  It’d be worse… much worse for these poor Pats.

Sidenote 30 years later… it makes me even happier that this was the Patriots that we pounded.  Before they became the franchise, the cheaters, the B&B championship combo, we kicked their ass!

So yeah, 44 unanswered… but it started with 2 Butthead FGs.  So it was only 6-3 before Matt Suhey, yeah, Matt Suhey scored the game’s first TD on an 11 yard run.  I remember he was so low to the ground that entire run… I thought for sure he wouldn’t make it.  But he did, and the Bears pulled ahead.

Then McMahon, then Butler, then McMahon, then the defense (Reggie Phillips!?!), then the Fridge, then a Pats TD (WTF?!?), and finally a Henry Waecter safety.  I didn’t want it to end.  It was a complete domination.  You know what the defense did that game… what they did to most opponents that year.   They shut them down.

123 total yards, and almost half of that was on their one TD drive.. when the game was long over.  7 sacks, 6 turnovers, 1 knocked out QB… .Eason didn’t even complete a fricking pass.  Poor old man Grogan running around the pocket…haha.  It was men among boys out there.  It was the crowning of a champion.  It was the best team in NFL history.  It was history.

Sackman corralled the MVP; they had to give it to somebody on the defense.  Or maybe they could have gave it to Sweetness for all the years he put in to get to this point… maybe they could have gave him the ball for a TD late in this one… I didn’t want to go there, but I had to mention it.  It was the 2nd regret from the entire almost perfect year.

46-10 will be a final score that will never be forgotten.  So as Ditka and Buddy were carried off the field, my dad put on the Super Bowl Shuffle record… and played it over, and over, and over… as my brother, sister, and I ran up and down the house… jumping on the couch, jumping on the bed.  Yeah, I was only 9 years old, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

So I was spoiled… we were spoiled.  We saw the greatest team ever.. I saw this at the age of 9.  Where do you go from here?  Thankfully, we’ve went many places as Chicago sports fans, and only have one more place to go.  Has anything since ever compared to this year?  Sure.  Will anything ever surpass this moment?  Sure.  But for that one year, that one year that is forever etched in our memories, we were kings.  We were the kings of the world.  Our Bears.  Our Super Stars.  We were Super Bowl champions.

The 85 Bears continue to have a big impact in this city… 30 years later.  Like I said, have their been other great teams, and great moments, and other memories that will last a lifetime… yes there have been thankfully,  But this team… this team that has one year attached to it… 1985… has never been topped… and the Bears have only been back one time since then…. that helps keep this moment alive, although I don’t think anything could ever erase it.

So no, I’m not done talking about them… and neither is the world.  The ESPN 30 for 30 debuts this Thursday night; the DVR will be set.  But I will be sitting down in front of that TV, zoning in, and taking that walk down memory lane as done by professionals. I will remember what it felt like to watch this through the eyes of a 9 year old.  I will relive one of my greatest sports memories. The 1985 Bears will be center stage once again, and we’ll all be watching… prouder than ever.

Im just here to do the Super Bowl shuffle!
The Bears knew halfway through the 85 season. The rest of world knew after the destruction of the patriots in SBXX. How sweet is it to have a team that you completely believe in? Kind of like the Bulls having MJ and knowing there is no way in hell he is going to let them lose. There was never a doubt with the 85 Bears…that is how much better they were that year. The SB was just the coronation of the best team the nfl has ever seen! Will be enjoying the 30 year anniversary recordings of the 85 Bears this sunday before this year’s SB so the kids can see how dominating that Bears team was. One day, and hopefully soon, the Bears will climb that mountain again to do the Super Bowl shuffle. Until then, the 85 Bears memories remind us of what greatness is all about! BEAR DOWN 85 Bears!!!
