February 25, 2018: Spring Nears

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

As Spring nears every year, that means one thing:  the return of baseball.  Yet no matter the year, Spring Training, which has already begun, does not get me over the top excited.  Here’s my annual article talking about how I don’t care about Spring Training.

It doesn’t make sense in one aspect.  I wait for the return of the Cubs from the day they stop playing.  In years like this one, with the Bulls and Blackhawks both going to miss the playoffs, the return of the Cubs is anticipated more than ever.  Once Spring Training begins, and the games start, I should be going nuts right?  Well, I’m not there yet.

It usually takes me time to get there.  Maybe it’s because at the end of the day, these games do not count.  Just like preseason in any other sport, I really don’t get into it.  Forget about basketball and hockey.  The only preseason I pay attention to is football, and that’s because I’ve actually been to a few of those games.  We’re actually planning on a big outing for the boys this year.  Maybe that’s it.  Maybe that’s why I can’t get into Spring Training.

I’ve never been!  I think I may have missed my window for that too, at least for now.  With my son in school full time, there is no real opportunity to get away for a week to Arizona with the family.  I probably should have planned that one of the past few years.  I did get to see the Cubs play in an exhibition game against the Sox in Las Vegas some years back.  That was awesome.  Everybody from Chicago packing that little park in Vegas… I mean, Cubs, Vegas, how can you go wrong?

Yet, the Spring Training experience is one that I have not had yet.  I think this has to go on the bucket list.  I will get there one year… But until then, I’m here to bitch about how Spring Training doesn’t excite me like it probably should.

Have you seen Schwarby?  Looks like a totally different guy.  How about Baez already making spectacular plays?  Then there’s the return of a healthy Addison Russell.  There are many story lines to be excited about, as the Cubs are primed to make another run to the World Series.

I am already looking forward to the regular season.  Already having scored tickets to 3 Cubs games this year, including knocking off 2 parks that I have never been too, gets me pumped up.  I’m sure I’ll get some more to see them at Wrigley too.  I can’t wait for the regular season to begin.

Until then, just stay healthy boys.  Enjoy that Arizona weather; that sure would feel nice right about now.  Maybe that’s why too… we’re still in the tail end of winter while everybody at Spring Training is out in the sunshine; am I hating on that?  Nah…

How about the Cubs start their own even year magic?  First 2016, now 2018?  Works for me.  Bring on the real games.  Go Cubs!

Even year magic sounds good! Definitely excited about baseball and the Cubs again this year. While there is hope each and every year, the past few years have been even better just knowing that the Cubs are full of talent and looking to actually compete for a World Series! Spring training in Arizona one year sounds great. Would definitely be on the bucket list of things to do one year. The weather, the laid back atmosphere of games not counting, and being able to mingle with the players or run into them at a restaurant would be great. Never really get into spring training or preseason games of any sport. Just want my teams and players to get warmed up and stay healthy. So make sure you do that Cubs. Get ready for another grueling 162 games that will hopefully end up back in the playoffs and winning another World Series title! Sounds good to me…GO CUBS GO!!!
