February 27, 2016: Showing Signs

posted in: Bulls | 1

After stumbling out of the gate to an 0-3 start, and a very average 9-6 first month of the season, the Bulls took the opportunity to play better basketball in that last month of 1990.  They were showing signs of why this may in fact still be the year.. and why it may not.

We weren’t writing them off after this start, were we?  You know how we can be… really feeling those lows… really feeling those highs.  This Bulls team has been good for a while, but could never get over that hump… our hump was the Detroit Pistons.  We faced them for the first time this season on December 19th.

Before that date, December had been a better month.  6-2 at the point of the showdown.  The Bulls hadn’t won in Detroit in 3 years.  They were 3-22 in Detroit the past 10 years.  They had lost the last 6 playoff games there.  I remember the whole goal coming out of last year, after that Game 7 loss in Detroit, was to get home court advantage; it was for this exact reason.  We weren’t able to beat Detroit on their turf, so if we had home court advantage in the playoffs, we wouldn’t have to.  Still, wouldn’t it be nice to get a small sign, a small dose of revenge on this first matchup with the hated Pistons in the 1990-1991 season?  Wouldn’t it be nice to prove to them and ourselves that we could do it?  It would have been nice, but it didn’t happen.

The Pistons pasted the Bulls, like they typically did in Detroit.  The final score was 105-84.  It was another beatdown.  Jordan had a good game… in case you didn’t know, he didn’t have many bad games.  He poured in 33 points, but the rest of the Bulls???  The next highest scorers with 9 points each were Bill Cartwright and Stacey King.  What about Pippen?  2 for 16 from the floor with 4 points.  The Robin in the Batman duo was horrible against the Pistons; they manhandled him, they made him get migraines, they made him play like crap.  Surely, he and the other Bulls would have to step up to finally take these guys down.  Jordan couldn’t do it on his own, although he certainly tried.  This loss left the Bulls at 15-9… the same record as the Detroit Pistons.  Status quo here we come.

But the Bulls quickly turned the page after this loss.  They didn’t lose another game in 1990, rattling off 5 straight to end the month.  There were 2 notable victories in that bunch, both at the Stadium.  They beat the Lakers, which turned out to be a Finals preview, and the beat the Pistons on Christmas Day.  See, we COULD beat them at home.  Jordan scored another 37, but this time it would be Paxson, Pippen and Cartwright with 15, 14, and 12 points respectively.  A much more balanced effort gave the Bulls the 12 point victory.

The Bulls finished the month with an 11-3 record, bringing their overall record to 20-9.  But what did December really tell us?  It told us more of the same.  It showed us the Bulls were a very good team, but they still couldn’t win in Detroit.  What would 1991 hold for us?  How would we start the new year?  Will this be our year, or will this story have the same ending?  Welcome to 1991.

11-3 december as the Bulls played only 3 games on the road, going 1-2 while they went 10-1 at home to show just how important it would be to have home court in the playoffs. The Bulls were great in the old stadium. Could they be great on the road? They soon would be, but road games became closer to home games as Bulls fans would start traveling big time to see the Bulls and the GOAT. Pistons still a thorn in the side, but they will get dealt with and show their true colors later that season.
