February 3, 2018: Let It Begin

Let it begin.  Today marked the start of our floor hockey season.   It was time to get our shirts, strap on our helmets, and play our season opening double header.  I was ready.

I had a twinge of nervousness…hoping the season goes well…hoping my son plays well.  I remember getting nervous before a big game.  I didn’t think there was anything wrong with that.   If you don’t get butterflies, if you aren’t worried about playing well, if you aren’t worried about winning or losing…I think there’s something wrong with that.  I wonder if my son feels the same; I guess I could ask him.  I think he’s oblivious to it all right now.  I do have to remember he’s only five years old.   I just hope he has fun playing; I have fun watching him play.

He would start on defense in this one.  Object of the game:  puck crosses mid court, fire it back down.  He did ok.  He didn’t really get that many chances.  Our offense was dominating.  It was only 1-0 after one period, but the puck barely made it out of our zone.  Yeah, we’re a puck possession type team…haha.

He jumped on offense in the 2nd period.  He had a chance, but took to long lining it up.   Gotta shoot that quick.  Our other kids did.  3-0 after two.  Then my son suited up in the goalie gear.

Again the puck barely made it to him.  We tacked on 3 more goals as we were icing this game away.  The only thing in question was the shutout, and lo and behold, here came the puck towards my son.  Kid had a good look, shot the puck, but my son kicked it away.  He had one save in their only scoring chance.  The shutout was safe.

This floor hockey season is going to be polar opposite of our basketball season.   We probably have 4 kids, who, if they made an all star team, from what I’ve seen so far, would be on there.  I didn’t want to get too ahead of ourselves…  and the start of game two brought me crashing down to earth.

First play of the game kid came down and scored on us.  A bit later they converted a one timer…no joke.  Yeah that kid who scored on that play, he’d be on that all star team too.  He may be the best kid in the league.  An early goal in the 2nd period, and we were looking at a 3-0 deficit.

It wasn’t like we weren’t putting the pressure on their goalie.  He was like a young Patrick Roy in there.  But…the dam finally broke.  After a number of really good stops, they started going in.   Yeah, when it was all said and done, 5 unanswered goals.  It was actually 4-3 heading to the third, when my son suited up in goal again.   I was a bit nervous.  Felt good when we tacked on that insurance goal.

And our defense was playing great, but there was that one good scoring chance.  It was a scrum in front of the net, with a chance or two going off my son’s pads before the puck was cleared.   5-3 was the final.  2-0 start to the year.

Yeah, this season is going to be a bit different.  I saw the other two teams in action before our game…the one team had a kid that was pretty good.  I just see our depth being an issue for other teams all year.  With our top 4 kids, plus 3 others, including my son, at that second tier, it looks to be a good year for the Sharks.  This is going to be fun.
