And with the 1st pick of the 2007 NHL Draft, the Chicago Blackhawks select…

He would become the 2nd half of the dynamic duo.  Along with Jonathan Toews, he would lead the revival of the Chicago Blackhawks.  Just as Tazer, he may be considered at some point the greatest Blackhawk ever.  The Players Club opens its doors to #88, Patrick Kane.

Debuting with Toews in 2007. Kane finished ahead of all rookies with most points, while capturing the NHL rookie of the year award.  It was official after that 2007 season, that the Blackhawks were back.  The following year they made it back to the playoffs, losing to Detroit in the Conference Finals.  The next year, they came back and finished the job, winning their first Stanley Cup in 49 years.  Who can forget that game winning goal?  Who can forget who scored it?  I remember being so pissed that the Flyers tied the game late in the 3rd; punching the couch repeatedly.  Then I thought, it would be great to celebrate in OT, because once that goal is scored, IF that goal is scored, it’s over, and the Cup is ours.  Well, the goal was scored, except hardly anybody knew it… except the guy who scored it.  As Patrick Kane skated down the ice, he threw off his gloves… setting off a celebration for the ages.  Would you believe this kid drafted 3 years earlier just scored the game winning goal in the Stanley Cup finals?  He became the youngest player EVER to do that, surpassing a pretty decent player named Bobby Orr.

It wasn’t always such smooth sailing for Kaner.  Known as a party boy, getting in trouble off the ice, caused some concern.  You throw in the claim that he wasn’t a two way player, and some fans were pushing for a trade back to his hometown Sabres for Ryan Miller.  How crazy does that sound now?  He’s been good… great… on and off the ice.  He’s held up his part of the best 1-2 punch in the NHL.  He’s helped capture TWO Stanley Cups for the Hawks, with more to come.  He is a Blackhawk for life.

Do you know who leads the NHL in scoring?  Yep, actually tied for the lead; after yesterday’s goal and assist, Patrick Kane sits atop the entire NHL with 58 points.  When was the last time a Blackhawk led the NHL in scoring?  You have to go back to the 1968-1969 season, some 46 years ago.  Some guy named Bobby Hull accomplished that feat for the 7th and final time in his NHL career.  Is Patrick next?  I wouldn’t be surprised.

Leading one of the best teams in the NHL in both goals and assists, he is playing some of his best hockey.  He has truly come into his own.  He is an awesome combination of speed, goal scoring ability, and phenomenal vision on the ice.  His shootout move, where he slows down and stick handles before firing one past the goalie, is almost unstoppable.  What he does with the puck on his stick is flat out crazy.  This kid has all the skills.  Oh yeah, and by the way, he’s clutch too.  Besides that Stanley Cup game winner, he has 6 other game winning goals in the playoffs, and 35 of them in the regular season.  That matches up nicely with the other half of the dynamic duo who has 10 GWG in the playoffs and 37 in the regular season.  Like I said, the best 1-2 punch in the NHL.

He was showing off his skills last night against Winnipeg as the Hawks got a much needed win.  With a goal and the assist on the game winning goal, he’s always in the middle of the action.  By the way, the game winning goal scorer Brandon Saad… maybe he’ll be that #3 in the 1-2-3 punch???  Until then, let’s get used to seeing 19 and 88 for a long time.  Their new identical contracts kick in next year.  They’ll retire as Blackhawks.  They’ll have their numbers retired.  They may even have a statue next to the original Hawks dynamic duo, Hull and Mikita.  Legends for sure.

Come on in Patrick.  Make yourself at home.  You may have to save a lot of room at that Blackhawks table.  I have a feeling they’ll be some more joining you and Toews soon.  Until then, let’s keep it up.  Let’s get that leading scorer in the NHL title.  Let’s bring that 3rd Stanley Cup and more back to Chicago.  Let’s continue to be legendary.  88 is great.
