February 8, 2018: Snow Prices

posted in: Blackhawks | 2

As schools began to announce closings, and the snow anticipated in Chicago reached 14 inches, I thought of something; I’m sure those ticket prices for the Blackhawks home game at the UC on Thursday night against the Stars would be plummeting.  I was right; snow prices were in full effect.  Once we received the confirmation for my son’s school’s closing, the coast was clear.

I ended up getting $25 tickets in the first row of the 300 level; unheard of really.  Now it was just time to finish dinner and get back on the road.  Just as the weatherman predicted, it had started snowing right about 6pm.  The drive there wasn’t bad at all; now I hoped we found our free parking.  It would have sucked to fork over $25 for parking.  As I drove down Warren and pulled up to Hoyne, there it was… well, sort of.  It was a half a parking spot, but with a quick glance around, this looked to be our only option.  So I stuck it there, with the rear half of the car in the no parking zone.  The cops wouldn’t be jerks out here on a night like this would they?

Since I bought the tickets last minute, and we have no printer at home (I can’t believe we don’t have a printer at home!), I would print the tickets once we arrived at the stadium.  I entered in the first gate on Madison, and was told to head to the atrium to print our tickets.  As we walked that way, a guy hailed me down.  He had some extra tickets.  His family couldn’t make it, and he wanted to give it to someone with a small child, so he gave them to me.  I shook his hand and thanked him.  Then I looked at the tickets, and realized we just got a huge upgrade.

We headed to our seats…. 14 rows off the ice… boo-ya!  It was almost anthem time… and we’re off.  I had just bitched about Seabs and Toews, and those were the two involved in the first goal of the night; let the singing begin.  Could this be the goal that turns around Toews and the Hawks?  As the period rolled on, Tommy Hawk performed.  He was at the other side of the stadium, but the girl next to us told my son, he’s usually right here… like 4 seats from where we were sitting.  The next timeout, that’s precisely where he was.

Got some cool pictures of my son with Tommy Hawk.  Then my son was thirsty.  He had been asking for water since about 5 minutes in, and I had delayed as long as I could.  With about 5 minutes left in the first, we headed out.  We got that water, and hit some stores.  When he wanted a Tommy Hawk toy, I couldn’t resist.  We got back to our seats right before the start of the 2nd period; perfect.

That was an exciting period, which included some more pictures with Tommy Hawk, with my son proudly showing him his mini me we had just purchased.  The action on the ice was good, until about 5 seconds left.  How the hell do you let up a goal with 5 seconds left?  I thought starting Forsberg was smart, but you have to make that save.  It all started with a Keith turnover on our blue line though…

So we ran to the atrium really quickly; that store is great.  We took some pics and recorded some audio in the el car before heading back to our seats for the final period.  The Hawks gave no effort.  They looked like my son, who started getting sleepy as he rested his head against my arm.  I wasn’t even paying attention when a t-shirt flew right in front of us.  I put out my left hand and snatched it; yep, still got it.  As the period wound down, and it was obvious this game was over, we started getting bundled up; my son had started dozing.  As we were about to leave, the empty net goal went in, and it was official.  The Hawks couldn’t pull out a win for us on this otherwise perfect night.

On the way out, a lady gave my son a Toews fist bump buddy; how nice was that?  It wasn’t even the giveaway this night.  We took about 20 minutes walking to the car as my son played with the snow the whole way.  All these drunk guys & kids encouraged him to pelt either one of their friends or one of the cars in the parking lot; I just laughed.  Yeah, it was a great evening overall.  I just hope my son remembers nights like this…

When he got to the table where everybody makes a sign to hold up, of course, he wanted to make a sign too.  He grabbed a marker and started writing, asking me for help with the spelling of a few words.  When he was finished, the sign read:  Thank you Dad for taking me to the Blackhawks game.  You’re very welcome son….anytime.

$25 dollar Hawks tickets is unheard of in the last 10 years…hahaha. Just like the unheard of ticket prices, the Hawks not making the playoffs seems unheard to, too, but unfortunately, it is seeming more and more like it is going to happen. Toss in free tickets on top of the $25 tickets and you were set! 14 rows off the ice only to see the Hawks play like crap again. While the actual game was a waste, the time with your boy was not. Memories like these will be looked back on and remembered happily. Pretty cool stuff! As for the Hawks, time’s a wasting. We keep waiting for a push but nothing seems to be working. Backs against the wall Hawks, do you have a response left? GO HAWKS!!!
