January 13, 2018: Keeping Our Guy

posted in: Bears | 1

Well, we don’t have to wait any longer for one of the two guys I talked about earlier this week.  The Bears have officially retained Vic Fangio as Defensive Coordinator.  I am very happy with this development for many reasons.

Continuity with the defense for starters.  The defense, at times, played at an elite level.  Eventually, the injuries caught up to us on the defensive side of the ball, but when healthy, we were good.  Adding depth on the defensive side of the ball should be one of the priorities this offseason.  Heck, how about signing a big free agent or two to upgrade.  And what about Kyle Fuller?  Thinking the tag there.. unless we can get him to sign to a team friendly multi year deal; is there any such thing any more?

The fact that Fangio stays with the relatively young defense could make the Bears one of the top destinations for one of those free agents I was mentioning.  We’ll have the cap space; won’t have to pay Glennon the rest of his deal.  I’m not up on the top defensive free agents this offseason, but will be eventually.  We’ve steadily improved the personnel on the field on that side of the ball; it’s time to do it again, and take the next step.

The fact that our new head coach is a first time head coach makes keeping our guy Fangio even more important.  He’ll have enough things to worry about.  Plus, he already said as far as the defense goes, he’ll just oversee it, leaving the running of it to the DC.  That had to be an attractive deal for Fangio; I’m sure he got paid too.  But having control of the defense is pretty cool.  I wonder who has control over his defensive hirings?  Now that Fangio stays, does he get to keep who he wants?  Does he get to replace guys with who he wants?  That will be interesting to see play out.  And then what about that personnel on the defensive side of the ball?  I’m sure his input is valued, but how does he get one of the defensive guys he wants to the top of the draft board vs the other side of the ball, where WRs and OLs should be added.

The meeting between Nagy and Fangio must have went well.  We had heard stories about friction between Fox and Fangio.  Not sure how true all that was, but with Pace and Nagy appearing to be on the same page, it’s critical that Fangio is right there too.  He needs to be part of those decision makers.  He needs to feel valued and appreciated.  If so, the sky is the limit for Fangio and this defense; like I said, I’m very happy.

It wouldn’t have been so horrible to bring in somebody new if necessary.  With the hires Nagy has made thus far getting rave reviews, you’d have to believe he had some good guys lined up just in case Vic couldn’t make up his mind.  Still, if I had my choice of those two options, Vic would be the one, and he is.

Ready for the regular season to start?  I can’t remember being this excited for the start of a season in a while.  Lately that’s been reserved for the start of Cubs baseball… still is.  But now this… now Da Bears having an impressive offseason, and it really has only just begun.  Excited to see the other pieces added… ready for 2018 to be the year we come out of hibernation.  Bear Down!

Welcome back Vic! The main coaching pieces are now in place. Nagy and his OC can get to work on that side of the ball while Vic gets back to making the Bears D better every year. With Vic staying, the D scheme remains, and with a lot of young guys only getting better, the Bears D could be top 5 next year. Add some more talent and try to stay a bit more healthy and watch out! Fangio should have some say as to who he wants, both via free agency and the draft. The coaching puzzle for the Bears seems to have come together nicely. Time for Pace and Nagy to get draft ready and work on their pitches to get some free agents to sign. Could it be, the Bears seeing a light in their cave? Is it time to wake up? 2018 will be the year to push playoffs and beyond!
    BEAR DOWN!!!
