January 20, 2018: Shark Kids

So we found out our team name on Saturday; it will be the Sharks.  This will be the first time I won’t be head coach of my son’s team, but the head coach did call on me to be his assistant; so I will be out there for every practice and game.  I’m ready.

Hockey is the sport that I am the least familiar with, so it’s probably a good thing to have somebody else as head coach.  Baseball, I could teach you inside and out; basketball, I was OK.  But hockey… I never really played it growing up.  I didn’t play in a floor hockey league, however, floor hockey WAS part of the mix of sports we played in what was called Group Teams at the Boys Club.  It was a lot of fun.  One of my buddies took the puck off his face; it’s plastic, but I’m sure that still hurt.  Personally, I preferred handball in the selection of Group Team sports; I loved being the goalie.

We played hockey outside a few times, but never with skates.  We played at a park that was frozen over with our gym shoes on; that was fun as hell.  Again, one of my buddies took a puck off his face… right between his eyes when he was playing goalie.  I did have the table top hockey game; I had the Flyers vs Islanders version.  Many, many hours of fun was had there.  By starting my son in a floor hockey league at the age of 5, he’s already on his way to a more prolific hockey career than his dad; that wasn’t hard…. haha.

We did the stick handling drills, practiced passing and shooting, and then there was the “scrum” drill.  I’m not sure what it’s called… maybe I’ll ask the coach next week.  I shot the puck into the corner and 2 kids raced after it, each trying to get it into the net before the other; I knew this would be interesting.  My son was matched up with a kid who looks like he’s going to be pretty good.  The first time around, my son got the puck and stuffed it into the net; he was so happy… I was so proud.  The second time around didn’t go as well.  This time the other kid beat him and scored; my son threw down his hockey stick and walked away.  The coach said he’d talk to him; I was not happy.  He came back for the third time around, and honestly, I couldn’t really tell you who scored the goal.. they both swiped at it, but he didn’t think it was him, so it was meltdown part II.  He’ll learn…  he’s only 5.

A couple of the other dads, including our coach, came up to me and told us their boys were the same way.  I love the competitive streak no doubt… can’t let his emotions get the best of him.  Again, he’s only 5.

I can’t wait for the season to start.  One more practice before we get rolling.  It will be fun watching the Shark kids; it looks like we have a pretty stacked team too.  This should be a lot of fun.  Can’t wait.

The Sharks huh? Easy way for the kids to start rooting for the pro versions with the same names. The Bhawks definitely dont need the sharks making any noise. Hopefully, the little floor hockey sharks do all the feasting on the hardwood. Definitely does not hurt having talent on the team. Winning cures everything, even not scoring and/or playing well. Good luck on the season…light the lamp nephew!
