January 22, 2018: The Stories

Dad, tell me a story.  It’s been a recent addition to our bedtime routine.  We will still read 2-3 books every night, say our prayers, and say what we’re thankful for, or what we want to pray for.  During Christmas, I would sing a few Christmas songs as he faded away to sleep.  He still wants me to sing a song… so I’ll throw in 1-2 a night, but before that… he wants to hear stories.

I’ve been mixing it up, telling him stories about when he was a baby, about his mom and I, and about stuff that happened when I was growing up.  There never seems to be an end to the stories; I guess that’s a good thing.  I think that means life’s been good to me so far.  There are some stories I may never share, some stories I may not share until much later, but there are thankfully not that many bad stories; regrets, I have a few…   Thankfully, there are many more good stories…

Seeing him grow up, reminds me of when I was a kid.  Going to the well, telling him stories of my childhood, has been the most common theme thus far.  After some of the stories, he’s pretty amazed.  I told him… ask your uncle and/or aunt about it.  Haha…

Speaking of his uncle… happy birthday!  The last of the 30s…   Speaking of his uncle, there are many, many stories there.

I’ve already told him of the bloody hole in your chin.  I’ve told him about all the wrestling we would do.  I’ve told him about our backyard wiffle ball games.  We’re just scraping the surface.  I didn’t tell him how you slam dunked over me on that rim (basket) on the side of the barn in Michigan, when I broke the window and cut my back.  I didn’t tell him about all our memories as we got older; some of those may have to wait until he gets older.  As he grows up, more and more memories come back to me; I’m sure you can relate.

And then there’s the games we’ve been to together, none better than that Game 6 of the 1992 NBA Finals; how awesome was that?  The Cubs game I was about to get kicked out of… not so awesome.  The Cubs Dodgers playoff game in LA; one of the all time worst.  The first Cubs Dodgers game in LA, pretty good.  The Dodgers Giants game we went to with the rain delay was pretty fun.  The Hawks games with Dad, another coming up soon.  Yeah, lots of stories.  How about the preseason Bears Cardinals game?  Oh man…  And now, the number one commenter on my blog… thanks!

Yes, I’m thankful for all those stories.  I’ve truly been blessed to grow up with such a loving family, creating so many good memories.  I continue to be blessed with a loving wife and son.  It is all good… it is all good.  What stories will I tell next…  what new stories will be created next.  I can’t wait to find out.

Story time and songs…sounds familiar! Pretty cool that the kids love hearing about our times growing up. They get a kick out of our stories. Some can be told now, some will be told when they are a bit older, and some may never be told. So many of our stories are such great memories that are looked back on fondly. All the times as kids growing up, living and partying together, taking trips, going to games, working…the list can go on and on. Thanks for the birthday shout out! Last of the 30s…pretty crazy! Life moves on and the memories keep being made. Definitely thankful for all of them. Your stories always were the best laying in bed as kids. They still are even now!
