January 28, 2018: Exhibition Games

When did you stop watching the “all star” games of each sport?  Maybe you still watch them.  I have no interest in them at all.

On Sunday, there were two of those games going on, the NHL All Star game and the NFL Pro Bowl.  I didn’t watch one minute of either of those games.  It showcases the best players in the league, that should be pretty cool.  I guess the main reason I don’t watch these games is because the players don’t really seem to care who wins.  On second thought, that may be part of it, but more than not caring who wins or loses, is the fact that I really don’t watch many sports outside of my teams.  So, since neither of the teams in all of these exhibition games is a Chicago team, I’m not interested.  I don’t think I was always like that…

I still do watch the MLB All Star game; I’ve always liked that one.  I can’t remember the last time I watched the Pro Bowl… seriously, I can’t.  I may have watched some of the more recent NHL All Star games, like over the past decade, because of the Blackhawks in it.  I haven’t watched the NBA All star game since the Jordan days… maybe I’m just getting old.

Make it worth something.  I hear they are trying to add some monetary value to the game for the players, but rewarding 50K to the winners is nothing for these millionaires.  I don’t like the winning team in the All Star game to get the home field advantage for the World Series; I think that’s stopped now… although it worked out OK in 2016…. haha.  The Pro Bowl is especially stupid because it’s held at the end of the season… oh wait, no, just before the end of the season, while the 2 best teams in the league are getting ready to play in the Super Bowl.  So half the voted in players don’t even play.  Then there’s all these players that get to fill in that get to add Pro Bowl to their resume; I think that’s kind of hokey.  Yeah, and I know Jordan Howard was one of those guys; oh well.  You should only have that title of all star or all pro if you’re voted in, not if you fill in for somebody.

But back to making the game meaningful… besides money and home field advantage, what else could be done?  I don’t know… my brain isn’t really working right now.  Give me what you got.  Somebody else come out with a good idea.  Too bad it just couldn’t be about pride, and wanting to win more than wanting to lose.  That fire just doesn’t burn as strong as it used to I guess…  like I said, I’m getting old.  Now screw these exhibition games and get back to the games that count.

Did not see any of the Pro Bowl…have only seen highlights for the past I don’t know how many years. It really makes no sense when it is held. Plus, so many guys opt out due to “injuries” that guys who shouldn’t even be playing get to go. I like the idea of it being held in Hawaii, although that had changed, but the nfl needs to come up with something better to get guys to go and care.
I did watch some of the nhl all star game. I think they did a good job making it 3 on 3 in recent years. It is much more exciting to watch knowing that there will be some goals but still some pretty sweet saves, too. I used to like the fastest skater and hardest shot competitions…do they still do those?
As for the basketball all star game, that has become a joke. Guys play no defense and just let dunks happen all game long. The dunk and 3 point contests usually draw some interest, but even those are getting weak because of the no names that do them.
The mlb all star game is probably the best of the bunch. Throw in the home run derby and you get back to back nights of baseball enjoyment.
