January 30, 2018: 2nd Half Here We Come

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

THAT’S the way to start off the 2nd half of the season.  What a nice win that was in Nashville on Tuesday night, especially nice because it was beating those Predators on their home ice.  I don’t care that Rinne was not starting… not my problem.  Hawks got the 2 points and got out of there.  2nd half here we come!

Speaking of goalies… it was nice to have Crawford back in net.  Wait a second, no, that was Anton Forsberg.  Wow!  That guy absolutely stood on his head in this one.  The Preds started out of the gate pretty slowly, but from the end of the first period to the end of the third period, they brought it, and Forsberg matched it.  The only goal they did score was fittingly on the only bonehead move of the night by Anton.  So, he technically cost himself the shutout, because without that play, it would have been a shutout.  Yeah, he did get beat a couple times, I believe there were 2 goal posts, but he played about as well as you can expect from any Blackhawk goalie not named Corey Crawford.

On the other side of the ice, the MVP had to be Vinnie.  He made a nice play to setup the first goal, and then took things into his own hands for the second.  Yes, there was a bit of a screen on that slapshot, but it was still a nice slapshot.  2-1 was the final.

I saw a crazy stat, at least I thought it was, flash up after the 2nd period.  The Hawks were winning 2-1 at that point.  The stat said Chicago was 14-0-2 when leading after 2 periods; well, now it’s 15-0-2.  I found that amazing considering how inconsistent and average the Hawks play has been overall.  I found that amazing considering all the games Crow has missed.  I found that telling, that, that’s what we need to do… get that early lead, and we can hold it down from there.  Easier said than done, but wow… I was blown away by that stat especially for this year’s team.

Yeah, the Preds are still 10 points ahead of the Hawks in the standings, but it felt good to stick it to them on this night; it was a reminder of what we used to do to them.  The tables have turned since then; I would love to turn them back to our favor.  Hopefully we’ll get that chance in the postseason.

Speaking of that, although the Blackhawks are dead last in the division with 55 points, they are only 4 points out of a playoff spot.  32 games left to go, I’m still nervous about making the playoffs.  Seeing how they’ve played in the last few games, I’m really hoping they keep up the good play.  To be safe, I think the Hawks would have to win 20 of the 32 games left; that would give us 95 points.  That should be enough to get in, or will it?

No need to count points at this point, just keep playing hard and the wins will come.  Next up, the Canucks.  They’re one of the three teams in the West behind us; let’s push them down further and take advantage of this matchup.  Go Hawks!

The Hawks got a big road W to start their playoff run after the all star break. Forsberg was great all game but especially in the 3rd stopping about 25 shots. Going to need Forsberg and Glass to be very good for the Hawks to have a chance. Offensively, 2 goals got the job done vs the preds, but the Hawks offense needs to get going, too. The goalies cannot be perfect, give them something to work with. I saw the same stat about the Hawks entering the 3rd with a lead…pretty damn impressive, but there is also a flip side to that, their record when down entering the 3rd. I think any point total in the 90s might be enough so 20 wins should definitely get the job done. 1 game at a time. Ride this momentum up to Vancouver and take care of the sedin sisters and crew.
    GO HAWKS!!!
