January 5, 2016: Kickers Matter Too

posted in: Bears | 1

So we’re not quite done with football this year… Yeah, we have the playoffs coming up, but I’m still talking 85 Bears.  The season long feature still has the best to come.  Let’s pick up this story in week 15, and a trip to New York.

Not the Giants… not yet, but this trip featured the Jets.  The Jets were no slouch that year.  Finishing the season at 11-5, they played in the AFC Wild Card game vs non other than the New England Patriots.  In this week 15 matchup, the Bears were only 2.5 point favorites in the Meadowlands.  A loss, a non-cover against a bad team preceded this week… maybe there was some doubters heading into this road matchup that really didn’t mean that much playoff seed wise to the Bears.  But… this team was still on a mission to destroy everything that stood in its way.

We didn’t exactly destroy the Jets this week.  A 19-6 win was all we got.  It was good enough for the win and the cover.  This game featured 6 FGs.  Pat Leahy used his foot to score the only points for the Jets on this afternoon, while a certain rookie kicker for the Bears made his 4 attempts.  Kevin Butler led the NFL in scoring that year, and he wasn’t exactly your average kicker.

This guy was nuts.  I remember him head butting other guys when he got excited.  He didn’t mind mixing it up, trying to tackle guys on kick returns, etc.  He was a tough guy kicker.  He never wore any long sleeves, and always bore those pale white arms, no matter how cold it got.  He was pretty damn good too.  28-29 from 40 yards or less on the season.  He wasn’t the best outside of 40 with a 3-8 success rate, but with 51 extra points, he ended the season with 144 points, the most he scored in any year of his career.  Butt-Head was one of the best kickers in franchise history, and with his contribution this year, showed us that kickers matter too.  He donned the #6 in navy… I like to remember him wearing that #6, not the current owner…

So bad news this game too.  Payton’s streak of 100 yard rushing games ended at 9.  It wasn’t for lack of trying.  He had 28 rushes, but only got up to 53 yards.  He did have one long reception for 65 yards though.  The only TD on this day was a McMahon to Tim Wrightman pass.  The defense did its normal thing; holding this opponent to 159 total yards and only 6 points.  Like I said, the Jets were no slouch.  Ken O’Brien, Al Toon, Wesley Walker, Freeman McNeil, Johnny Hector, and Mickey Shuler were all guys I recall from back in the day.  Nobody did anything on this day… nobody typically did against this defense.

This win brought the Bears record to 14-1 after 15 weeks. The season finale in the Detroit Silverdome was all that remained before the 2nd season began.  Will the Bears finish off strong?  You bet your ass they will…  See you in Detroit.

Just like other games that 85 season, the Bears dominated the time of possession vs the jets, almost 40-20mins! This is a big reason why the D was as good as it was. In addition to the talent level and scheme, they were well rested most games and could dominate their short time on the field.
