July 20, 2017: The Open Window

posted in: Bulls | 1

We all have to take advantage of the open window.  Lately, for me, it’s all about finding time to keep up with my favorite hobby; yeah, this daily blog genius.  I know it’s not hot of the press type shit, but who has time for that?  Well, if I didn’t have a day job…  But I get around to it.  Normally I’m pretty on point; it’s been really tough lately.  But here I am… looking at an open window of time to knock out a few.  I have my laptop, so I can really fly typing this out.  Keeping up with my thoughts is sometimes a challenge on the iPad, and near impossible on the iPhone.  So I’m going to take advantage of this open window and get current.

The days go by… my blog is not updated… but that does not mean I haven’t been watching… waiting for this window to bang out a few…  Last we talked was Wednesday after the Cubs sweep in Atlanta.  So we’ll pickup on Thursday, where I happened to catch a certain Hardwood Classic on NBA TV.

Watching this game… Game 6 of the Bulls Celtics series in 2009… filled me with mixed emotions.  It made me happy… to see rookie of the year Derrick Rose pre-knee injuries, to see young buck Joakim Noah pre-surgeries, to see the Bulls playing with all kinds of heart, and the UC rocking.  Yeah, I miss that.

The window was just opening for those Bulls.  We took the number two seed Celtics to 7 games that year.  In case you didn’t remember, because I didn’t, the Magic won the East that year and lost to the Lakers in the Finals; snoozefest 2009.  But this series was anything but.  All the OTs, the back and forths, the fights, the big plays, the big shots… it had it all.

I kept waiting for it… you know, one of the moments that I will never forget about these Bulls.  I knew it happened at the end of the game; I knew Paul Pierce fouled out on the play.  It was the Joakim Noah going coast to coast after a steal, and emphatically slamming it down.  It happened in the 3rd OT of this game; you bet I watched until the end.  It would be this moment that they would play in the pre-game video montage for the next number of years.  It would be this moment that showed us that we weren’t scared.  We were young and hungry.  We were only getting started…

Then that other emotion kicks in… sadness which turns into anger.  This Bulls team never took advantage of their open window.  Yes, they did fire Del Negro after the next year’s first round exit vs Lebron and the Cavs, and they did get Thibs, who we watched on the Boston bench in this throwback, which was the smartest thing they could have done.  Yes, this Bulls team was ready to take the next step.

They did… going to the ECF against the Heat and that guy again.  I was there for Game 1, and that place rocked.  That game also brought one of the top memories of this Bulls team with Taj Gibson posterizing DWade.  Ahhh, the good old days.  The Bulls didn’t win another game that series, but I took it as paying dues.  Entering the 2012 playoffs as the 1 seed, we were ready to get that 7th title… then it happened… and then the window started closing.

It was fun for a night to remember those Bulls.  John Salmons and Brad Miller?  Hell yeah, them too.  It should have been the beginning of so much more, and now 8 years later, we have to see the Fire Gar Pax sign posted in the West Loop.  Yes, it’s funny how things turn out.  Still my team… wishing that sign lead to something… still waiting for number 7.  Go Bulls.

Damn, what a game that was at the UC. The Bulls sure were young and hungry. I remember feeling that it was the beginning of something special, and it was. The next couple of years just go to show how something so good could turn so wrong in a short amount of time. Injuries are mainly unavoidable but happen, sometimes at the worst time. That is what happened to drose, who now does not care about the money but just winning, so I expect him to head to a contender, maybe even the cavs, very soon. Back then, he was the hometown hero that was going to lead the Bulls to a 7th title. That seems so far and long ago. The Bulls future is bleak right now, but I guess things can turn around pretty quickly if the right pieces come together, especially in the weak and getting weaker east. Too bad garpaxberg is still the 3 headed monster in charge. Step up and make a move Jerry. We want the UC rocking again like it was on that playoff game 6 vs the celts. GO BULLS!!!
