July 28, 2017: Couple Years

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

I guess we could have let the Sox win the Cup.  This series was way more important to the Sox and their fans. They won’t be winning much from here on out this year.  What do we care about a crosstown cup?

The Cubs will finally move on to bigger and better things, but it was fun while it lasted.  The second half surge continues. 11-2 since the break. 1.5 games up on the Brewers.  It was very nice of the Sox to ‘let us’ win; it helped them too.  They continue to work towards a top draft pick.

I remember when this was the only series that mattered.  I remember when winning the crosstown classic was the best thing that would happen to the Cubs in a particular year.  I remember liking these games because they were the closest thing to a playoff game we would experience.  Don’t get me wrong.  There was still a little extra juice with these games, but after climbing the mountain, the only thing I’m thinking about is getting back there.  It’s the trophy will all those flags that I’m thinking about, not some knock off version of the Stanley Cup.

I ran into a Cubs hater yesterday.  I smiled really big and told him what a great game Wednesday night had been.  I told him I wished I had my hat on that was sitting on my desk; the one with the trophy on the side.  And as we went back and forth, he said how the MLB gave the Cubs the series last year and that it will be another 108 until we win again; I guess that’s the best Sox fans got nowadays???

At the end of the back and forth, I gave him a tip.  After the Sox won back in 2005, I told him the only comeback that I had as a Cubs fan.  Obviously, it happened; the Sox won while we still suffered.  The only thing I would tell Sox fans is:  you guys won the series, but who will win the next one?  I told them enjoy it because it will be the last one you see.  Well, those lines have come through so far.

The Sox haven’t sniffed another title, and yes, the Cubs did win the next one.  The good news for Sox fans is that they will be competitive in a couple years.  The bad news is that the Cubs will be competitive for the next decade.  Do you know how long some of these guys are locked up?  Baez, Bryant, Rizzo, Russell, and Schwarber are signed through 2022; Contreras through 2023.  So that line that I used 12 years ago, may not necessarily work, but it’s worth a shot…what else you got?

Later, my brother and I took a walk downtown; me with my championship hat on, and him with his ‘let’s do it…again’ shirt. That’s the real key here. It wasn’t Just some flash in the pan.  The Cubs are going to be good for a long time.

I remember something else I told Sox fans; this was about 3 years ago.  We still waited for our title; Sox fans still had their ring up on us and all that other drought ammunition.  I told them, enjoy it now, because coming soon, there’s going to be some rough years for Cubs haters.  I was right again.

And as we walked downtown, I was so proud; nodding at people in Cubs gear, smiling at people in Sox gear.  I saw this one lady with a Konerko shirt.  We smiled at each other; she knew what I knew.  I told her, couple years…couple years.  And although that may very well be true for the Sox, we know that the Cubs will still be killing it.  Who will win the next one?  Maybe Sox fans shouldn’t use that line…

11-2 since the break…Cubbie blue train blazin! As the Cubs took both games at CP3 and 3 of 4 from the sox, it feels good to have the Cubs back! They seem to be re-energized more focused now. It didn’t take long for that 5.5 game deficit to turn into a 1.5 game lead. The Cubs made up 7 games in 13 played…pretty damn good! Feels good to have such young talent locked up for so many years. The Cubs are good, have been the last couple years, and will be for years to come. The defending champs are back! Time to head a bit north and put some distance between us and the brewcrew. Who will win the next one? The sox fans will have to wait until next year, or the year after, or the year after that…sound familiar? Yep, not us Cubs fans. Our next year came last year. I hope it comes again this year. Back to back sounds good!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
