July 3, 2014: Sweeping

posted in: Cubs | 1

16 runs!  The Cubs score 16 runs… that usually is a weekly run total for this team.  On Wednesday night, it was all done in one game, as the Cubs swept a 3-game series from the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park.  Sweeping a series is not easy to do, and for the Cubs, it seems especially rare.  I’m going to savor this one.

First off, it was nice watching games in Fenway Park.  The only stadium older than Wrigley, and the only stadium even comparable, it is full of character and charm.  I appreciate that.  The next time the Cubs play in Fenway, I may be there.  I definitely need to get to a game in person in Fenway.  The only thing that was better than watching the Cubs play in Fenway, was watching the Cubs WIN in Fenway.

Yes, the Boston Red Sox may not be that good.  Currently, they sit only 1 game better than the Cubs.  The Cubs now sit at 37-46, which seems to be about as good as it gets lately.  The last time the Cubs were better than 9 games under was almost 2 months ago.  This is the task that they are faced with as they head into Washington for a weekend series on the 2nd stop of an 11 game road trip.  Coming in at 4-6 in their recent 10 game home stand, the Cubs are off to a great start on this long road trip.  Winning the first 3 games against Boston in a series sweep is a great start… a surprising start.

Sweeping a series is never easy.  How many series have the Cubs swept in the Theo era of the past 3 years?  Six.  This is a little higher than I thought, although it still only comes out to 2 per year.  They have a chance to increase that number, with still almost half the season remaining.  They are 2-0 in the 2nd half of the season, and look to shed that worst team in baseball title for good as we head into July.

The Cubs actually had a winning month in June at 15-13.  That’s a far cry from their 9-17 start.  They are no longer the worst team in the National League, or in all of baseball for that matter… far from it.  Tampa, Texas, Houston are worse in the AL, while New York, Philly, Colorado, and Arizona are behind us in the NL.  Nice job messing up our draft position for next year!  With 2 other teams ahead of the Cubs by only 1 game, they look to creep out of the bottom third of baseball.  They are only 8.5 games out of the wild card….

Ahhh, the optimism of a Cubs fan.  No matter what anybody else says, through brutal losing streaks and countless reality checks, this faith is never broken.  There is ALWAYS hope.  A good way to live life I might add.  Maybe I’m a dreamer, living in some dream world far, far from reality, but I’d argue that.  I’d argue that we make our own reality.  It’s all about perception isn’t it?  Glass half full vs glass half empty.  Finding that silver lining in almost any situation.  Well, as a Cubs fan, that’s what we do.  Lately, that’s all we can do.  I believe that will be changing very soon.

With the MLB trade deadline approaching later this month, how will this Cubs team look the rest of the way out?  I’m hoping not much changes.  If we unload 1 guy, I may be OK.  If we unload more, I will not be.  Imagine adding another bat or two to this team with the starting pitching the way it has been.  Could we really make a run at a wild card this year, or is this just one of the upswings in a season with more down swings.  I’ll admit to the latter, but with only 6 teams to pass to get into wild card position, it’s not impossible.  Only 6 teams… there goes that dreaming again.

My son is 2 years old, and I’ve been saying the Cubs will win before he’s in school.  Win another game???  haha… win it all.  That leaves the Cubs 2 years after this when he starts kindergarten.  That will conclude Theo’s 5 year contract.  Let’s get there.  Let’s start now.  With 11 games left before all star break, let’s go into the 2nd half with a BIG upswing.  Let’s win out!  Let’s go 13-0 to start the 2nd half of the season and start talking bigger at the All Star break.  Let’s become buyers at the trade deadline, not sellers.  Let’s get into the playoffs THIS year.  Let’s win it ALL this year.  Ahhh, it’s fun to dream.
