July 7, 2014: The Chicago Stars

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

At least we have some All Stars…  I think every team still has to have one, but these are earned by our guys.  The Cubs send Castro, while the Sox send Abreu & Ramirez.  With Rizzo and Sale on the final ballot, there could be a total of 5 Chicago guys playing in Minnesota on July 15th.  If the Cubs waited a couple weeks to pull the trigger on MLBs first big deal of the year, we could have had 6 guys…

It’s great to see Castro rebound from last year’s horrendous performance.  He has been playing like the Starlin we were used to seeing, minus most of the mental errors.  Although he still makes his share of fielding errors, he’s a lot more solid all around.  He’s become the guy the Cubs need him to be if they hope to compete in the near future.  I just hope the backlog of prospects at his position in the Cubs system doesn’t affect him mentally, because I still think he’s not the most mentally strong dude.  I also hope it doesn’t mean that he’ll be moved either; changing positions would be OK, but not changing jerseys.  Congrats Starlin, keep it up, and keep keeping your head in the game.

One of the no-brainers in the All Star selections was Jose Abreu.  The Sox have hit jackpot with this slugger.  On pace to hit about 50 HRs, he has had as impressive of 1st half of the season as anybody…ever.  Will he keep it up?  Who cares at this point… just enjoy the ride Sox fans.  If this guy can’t get people to come out to the ballpark to watch him play, I don’t know who can.  The other Sox selection was a head scratcher for me.  I don’t watch many games, but from what I’ve read he has been horrible the past 6 weeks or so.  Alexei started off like a man on fire, and ended the first half with a dud, but hey, he’s in.  There have definitely been worse guys who made the team.  I’m not sure there were any better ones left out on selection Sunday than Rizzo and Sale though…

I thought Rizzo would have made the team without having to be on the final ballot.  Tied for 4th in the league in HRs and 7th in runs to go along with a top 30 BA and RBIs (4th in walks too), I thought the numbers were good enough.  He’ll be in a dogfight with Anthony Rendon for the last spot on the NL roster.  Chris Sale may be the biggest snub of the year, although I definitely think he’ll make it in on the final ballot.  Since when does 8-1 with a 2.16 ERA NOT make you an All Star.  This was a slam dunk.  96 Ks and a sub 1.00 WHIP in 87 IP translates to a pretty impressive first half.  I’m not sure what happened here, but if he doesn’t make it in on the final vote, this will be a travesty.

The bright spots in what we knew was going to be a tough summer, our Chicago Stars give us hope.  They are proof that there is some level of greatness on both sides of town.  Even though it may only be a handful of guys combined, it’s something… something to build on.  The last guy that would have represented Chicago in the mid-summer classic was Jeff Samardzija.  He made his 1st start in Oakland and pitched like he did in most starts for the Cubs.  The only difference is he got the W, because his team scored some runs.  Good luck Jeff.  No hard feelings here.  I hope we don’t regret it too much.

There will be a year soon where we’ll have many more than a handful of guys in the All Star game.  There will be a year soon where both teams have winning records.  There will be a year soon when we make it back to the playoffs.  Until then, these guys give us something to watch; they give us something to cheer for when they take the field with the rest of MLBs greatest.  Congrats again to all the Chicago all stars… make us proud.
