June 23, 2017: Blackhawk Out

posted in: Blackhawks | 2

I got to work early on Friday, like 5am early.  After taking care of some business, I took care of some other business and let out my frustration about the Jimmy Butler trade.  As I finished and flipped it out to the Twittersphere, this week in Chicago sports was about to get even more interesting.  The Blackhawks were following up on their claim of necessary change.  Blackhawk out!

Hammer?!?  Really?!?  Man, I had a hard time with that one too.  We already lost TVR in the Vegas draft, but that didn’t really matter did it?  Well, if you’re a team whose weakness is defenses, then yes, but this was a bit different.  Hammer is a 3 time champ with us.  He was here through it all.  How many pucks did he take for us?  How many penalties did he help kill?  If there was one Blackhawk defender not named Keith, who would you have?  A warrior as defined by Bowman as he shipped him out, was an accurate description.  A core member of the Blackhawks dynasty or pretty damn close to a dynasty.  A champion.  Gone.

Figured it was a money move, but no.  Money was about equal.  Guess it was an age move?  A two for one move on the blue line?  I’m definitely not buying this trade.  I imagine if that name moved was Seabrook, folks would have accepted it a bit more?  Another core member would have been easier to understand than Niklas.  Still would have hurt, but it would have been more easily understood.  Like I said, who’s our number two defenseman?  Seabs now?  The new guy Murphy?  We still trusting in Stan?

As that one was sinking in, more news broke.  This one actually brought a smile to my face.  With all the salary cap casualties over the years, there was one that hurt more than any other.  Sure, I’d love to have Dustin back too, but the top loss in my mind, the guy that I couldn’t believe we let walk, was Brandon Saad. He’s back.  It wouldn’t be cheap, but it was worth it in my opinion.

Breadman bye bye.  The Robin to BatKane on that 2nd line that was so dynamic last year.  The kid with the unbelievable one timer.  The Russian Patrick Kane as he was billed.  There were other pieces in the deal, including Motte who I liked too, but Saad and Panarin were the main event.

Biggest difference besides being the better two way player, and the big postseason performances, was of course the Cups won here.  Did he win 2 with us?  Yes he did.  Like I said, someone who I thought would be a Blackhwawk for life, may now still be one.  Lose a lifer, gain a lifer.  What do you think?

I think it’s been one hell of a week in Chicago sports.  As I drove home on Friday, I passed by the UC.  Madison was blocked off.  Chicago was showing the world how to host an NHL draft party.  Think Bowman wanted to time this exactly the way he did.  Honestly, I thought there was going to be one more move.  Stan loved it.  He loved how he backed up his words and executed two big changes to the roster.  Supposedly coach Q was not as giddy.  Toews, Kane surprised.  Blackhawks better for it?  Let’s make that decision once the roster is set…there’s still a couple months until opening puck drop.

I don’t care for the Hammer loss either. I was pushing Seebs the whole off-season. He’s the one I could more see us move on without. Panaren,,,,,,didn’t see that coming. I like bringing Saad back, but not sure he was worth Panaren. Like you said, “we’ll see”.

Hammer? Really? Not sure I agree with that move. Thanks for the blocks, bruises, and Cups Hammer! You will be missed. As weak as the Hawks are on D, there was no way I thought Hammer would be gone. First tvr and now Hammer. Yes, it brought back 2 younger dmen, but they are unproven, especially postseason and Cup-wise. Well, they get their shot now. Big skates to fill no doubt.
Kruger gone via the Vegas draft. Bread shipped east? Saad coming back? Wow, bowman really pulled the trigger right before the UC nhl draft. He wanted to make some noise and sure did. Panarin had a great year but how much of it was due to playing next to Kaner? Saad is the better 2way player and has established himself in the postseason. What did panarin do in this first round? Yep, I’m ok with this move. Welcome back Saad! Time to chase that 4th Cup Hawks!
