June 28, 2014: Winner Winner

Cubs win, Sox win.  Can it all be so simple?  Why is it that hard to do?

I didn’t see any of the Cubs game on Friday… so that’s why they won!  Or, is it because Rizzo and Castro had big games again?  Or, is it because we played somebody outside our division?  The winner is:  door number 3.

I don’t believe they won because I didn’t watch, but if that’s what it took, I would watch a lot less, or would I?  How many fans would do that for their teams?  Stop watching the games because they win when you don’t watch them.  I’m not so sure I could do that.  Maybe for a short time, but let’s say it did work, and your team kept winning, and made it to the playoffs.  Would you NOT watch those games either?  Would you be able to NOT watch any of your team’s playoff games?  Would you sacrifice that for a World Series?  Whoa, whoa whoa…  Let’s just rewind for a second, and say that the result of your favorite team’s games has nothing to do with if you watch it or not.  How does that sound?  That’s probably more accurate, although you can’t say you never thought it…

So since the radical theory behind door #1 is not it, it has to be because Rizzo and Castro had big games.  No.  They actually went 1-8 in this afternoon’s affair ,while John Baker led the Cubs.  He had 3 hits and 4 RBIs as he provided enough run support by himself to get the win for Hammel.  So that leaves door #3.  Let’s take a closer look at the Cubs 34-44 record.

Playing outside the division has been what the Cubs need.  They are currently 20-22 outside of the NL Central.  Unfortunately, they play the most games IN the division.  The NL Central is the 2nd best division in baseball behind the AL West.  They are the only 2 divisions in baseball that from top to bottom have a cumulative above .500 winning percentage.  What a bad time for the Cubs division to get strong.  It’s been strong, but this may be its best year.  With Milwaukee having a record first half, the consistent bastard Cardinals, the up and coming (finally) Pirates, and the always hanging around Reds, the Cubs have to contend with 4 very good teams.  Why did the Astros have to move out of the division?  The Cubs record vs the NL Central: 14-22.  So here’s another tip to getting better boys: Win your division games.

The Sox hit the halfway mark of the season on Friday.  With a 37-44 record, they are making my projection of 75 wins for the season look pretty good.  With a 2-7 record so far on this road trip, they could be a lot better.  But let’s say they didn’t have Jose Abreu, who hit 2 more HR’s on Friday night.  They could be A LOT worse.  So, they’re right about where I thought they would be.  I really don’t expect them to be any worse or any better the 2nd half of the season.  I happened to watch the 9th inning of Friday night’s game, and I had Carlos Marmol flashbacks…

Ventura finally pulled Belisario after he allowed back to back singles after getting the 1st out in the 9th.  What a nightmare that guy is.  I liked Marmol for a long time, but at the end, he just needed to be put out to pasture.  Take him out back, and put him to sleep.  He single handedly cost the Cubs 8-10 games at the beginning of last year.  How many will Belisario and the Sox bullpen cost them?  I don’t know about this Petricka, but isn’t there anybody better than goggle man to close out games?  After using Surkamp (who are these guys?), who was the victim of an error by 3Bman Gillaspie, he went to Petricka to save the day.  I noticed Surkamp smiling as he was taken out of the game with the bases loaded… I don’t like that one bit.  Do you really care about winning, like your die-hard fans do?  No reason to smile there buddy.  Petricka got a force out, then a ground out, and the Sox held on 5-4.  Bring Hawk the oxygen tank.

So a double winner for the baseball teams on a Friday night means a good start to the weekend.  Keep watching, and don’t worry about jinxing your teams.  They’ll be winning and/or losing on their own, no matter how hard you try.
