June 30, 2014: The Franchise

posted in: Blackhawks | 4

Who would have thought it:  the Blackhawks the top franchise in this city.  They have turned into the model on how to run an organization.  They have set the bar for performance so high, that a loss this year in Game 7 of the Conference Finals was considered a disappointment.  With 2 Cups in 5 years, the Blackhawks have peaked a top the sports world here in Chicago, and they look to stay there for the foreseeable future.

How can Toews and Kane ask for 12 million dollars each?  I’ll tell you how.  These guys are the best players on the top franchise in the upward trending NHL.  With the NHLs popularity on the upswing, with the Hawks Kings series maybe the best series in a long time, there is money being made and now more money to be spent.  The Blackhawks have to be among the top of those NHL teams making money.  They have never been more popular than they are now.  To be this good and to WIN in THIS city makes this team worshipped, and makes these players kings.  The top 2 guys are Toews and Kane.  They aren’t going anywhere, and don’t worry about that initial number… they will figure it out.

It’s funny to read and hear some people rip into Toews and Kane for asking for too much.  How can we sign any other guys?  Now these guys are all about money?  Please…  It’s a negotiation people, and with the information I mentioned above, why not shoot for the stars?  Will they get 12 million each?  Probably not.  Will they still be the top paid players in the NHL?  Probably.  I see the number coming in around 10 million per year for each for another 5 years.  If any players deserve it, it’s them.  With their regular season performance coupled with their postseason successes and clutch performance, wouldn’t you pay them whatever it takes to keep them?  I would.  At the same time, I don’t think Toews and Kane will hold the Hawks hostage.  I think they will be fair in negotiations, but they will get paid… and they SHOULD.  Locking these guys up is just the start to keeping the Blackhawks on top.

Not dumping young talent is next up, and we’ve seen some of that already this offseason.  They have re-signed Ben Smith… yeah!  They have re-signed Antti Raanta… yeah!  Bowman has basically came out and said that Saad is untradeable… I should hope not.  He said the same for Teuvo, which I’m OK with.  I guess the only reason I would have thrown him out there is to add someone in their prime right now to this team.  Bowman knows best.  He’s got to think both short term and long term, and there is really no desperation mode here… no need to dump young talent, or to that point make any drastic moves.  This team is still the best and even though we talk big moves, there is really no need.  Again, I think we can trust in Bowman, based on the recent success… based on the tree from which the apple fell.

Scotty Bowman was/is a legend.  He has the most wins by an NHL coach, both in the regular season and the playoffs.  Oh, and he’s been a part of a total 13 Stanley Cups… not bad.  Yeah, unfortunately he led our arch-rival to a lot of these Cups, and sustained success over the good part of a couple decades, but now he’s on our side, as he mentors his son, Stan, on how to do it.  Not bad to learn from a hockey genius who was one of the best coaches in sports history.  So, yeah, with 2 cups of his own on his resume, and a history of greatness, why not trust Stan Bowman?

So when he lets Handzus walk, I trust him.  OK, bad example… anyone would have done that.  When he trades recently signed Bollig for a draft pick, we trust.  When he trades up to get his guy in the draft, Nick Schmaltz, we’re excited.  He’s been pushing all the right buttons so far this offseason, including the buttons that shouldn’t be pushed.  Again, tweaking, not overhauling.

I expect to hear the signing of our top 2 guys this summer, and when we hear how many dollars they get, remember… they’re worth every penny.  We want to keep our stars, who by the way are still only 26 (Toews) and 25 (Kane) years old.  We want the Blackhawks to stay on top of the NHL for a looooong time.  We’re lucky.  We want a franchise like this… I just hope the other Chicago teams are taking notes.

Toews and Kane are going nowhere. Yes, they are asking for a lot of cheese, but I expect them toe be completely fair. I am expecting a deal worth around $55million over 5 years for each of them. The Hawks have drafted and taken care of these guys. They know that Toews and Kane are the franchise guys who are just getting into the prime years of their careers. With all that both of them have done for the organization, they will be rewarded without a doubt. Thanks for the first 2 cups in 5 years! Looking forward to something similar over the next 5 years, with Toews and Kane leading the way! GO HAWKS!!!

nobody, in ANY SPORT, is worth $10 million bucks a year. i know it’s not out of line with others, but it’s out of line with any sort of normal reality, or at least what normal reality should be…….

12 Million a year is a bargin, compared to the money they bring in. Let get it done!

I agree. They are worth every penny they get but refrain from calling them ‘kings’ in future columns. Not my favorite comparison at this time. Alos, Stan the Man signed Jeremy Morin over the weekend as well. Let’s keep this thing going for a long time.
