March 10, 2018: Practice

How important is practice?  Well, I definitely don’t agree with AI on this one.  Practice is critical, period.  Is it more important than the game?  Of course not, but without practice, what do you got?

Are you just going to go out there and wing it?  Maybe that works for you as an individual because you’re so damn talented, or maybe that works for these youth teams where talent will overcome all, but to really play your best as a TEAM, you need practice.  To really play your best as an individual, you need practice.  At some point in your super talented life, you had to practice.  That’s how you got so talented.  This is never more true than with our youth.

Coaching baseball was fun.  To see the progress that these 4, 5, & 6 year olds made from the start to the end of the year was very fulfilling.  I believe the biggest reason this happened was because we practiced once a week.  Had we only played the games, the same progress would not have happened.  Had we practiced two times or three times per week, I would have seen more progress.

In basketball, we did not practice, and thus, we did not get that much better.  It didn’t help that most of the team couldn’t reach it to the rim, but with practice, the couple kids that could, would have been better, and maybe we would have scored a few buckets to win a few games.

Same goes for hockey.  Are we really that much better than we were at the start of the year?  I’ve seen it with my son… but that’s because we practice at home.  Here’s another example.  There’s one kid on our team that hasn’t scored a goal all year.  This Saturday was supposed to just be practice, but it turned into a practice game with the other team that was practicing.  From talking to his dad, he told me he bought him a stick, and they were playing at home.  Guess who scored his first goal of the season in this practice game.  Yep… 2 goals!!!  It’s amazing what a little practice does…

So we had our second practice of the year this past Saturday.  We were practicing passing, and shooting as soon as we got the puck… kind of like a one timer, but only one kid was really doing that consistently.  I had some more things in mind, but when the game broke out, it didn’t happen.  I guess that’ll have to wait until next year… or maybe some in game adjustments in our playoff game next week.

I did get some good news.  The head coach is moving up with his son who will be 7 years old.  So I’m IN as coach next year for 4-6 hockey!  So baseball, basketball, and hockey all locked up for the upcoming year, when my son will be 6, and at the top of the age range.  Who knows what will take place once he turns 7; I’ll certainly try to move up with him, but I’m glad to be locked and loaded for another season of each.  Now it’s time to practice some more for the big game next week…

Practice is an essential part of improving whatever skill or talent you may have. Yes, some are born super talented, but they still need practice to hone their skills. Others need practice to go from poor to average. Practice helps everyone differently. It matters how much effort you out into practice. Practice like it is a game. Sure, practice should be a little looser and less pressure packed, but if you put forth game effort, you should see the results. With little kids, practice can make all the difference. It is amazing to see how they grow from the start of a season to the end. Practice games are always wanted more than doing drills. Hopefully, the Sharks will be playoff ready. And congrats on locking up another coaching position! 1 year deal for? HAHAHA…GO SHARKS!!!
