March 13, 2016: Flexing

posted in: Bulls | 1

It started off innocently enough.  A win at the Mavericks followed by a loss at the Lakers, and February began 1-1. At this point, February 4th,1991, the Bulls were 30-14.  As they were about to take the court in Sacarmento, the Bulls would embark on the most impressive streak in franchise history.  They would proceed to win 20 of the next 21 games.  There would be no question who the beast of the East was after this next 44 calendar days. The Bulls were flexing; the NBA was put on notice.

One of the biggest wins came after an 11 point win in Sacramento. The Bulls would travel to Detroit…looking for their first win in the last three years up there.  They finally broke that streak. It was a tough fought two point victory.  Had the Bulls turned the corner?  Yes, Isaiah Thomas did miss this game, but the win was still huge. Maybe that was the only reason the Bulls were able to beat them, or maybe it was the first crack in the Pistons armor…the light at the end of the tunnel for our boys.  It certainly seemed to propel us to the next level…at least in the regular season.

Victories of 9, 10, 12, 15, 5, 47, 21, & 30 would finish off the 11-1 month of February.  After a 23 point win over the Mavs, the Bulls suffered their only loss in his 21 game stretch:  an ugly 21 point loss at the Pacers.  Reggie Miller would score 40, as MJ had an off night only scoring 22.  Miller, a sore loser and bad winner, would say the Bulls were nobody without Jordan.  At this point, he would be right.  The Bulls would have to be more than just MJ to win its first title in franchise history.  Hold that thought Reggie.

Nine more wins in a row after that loss. 18, 10, 35, and 32 point wins came before a 1 point victory against the Bucks.  John Paxson would hit some big shots down the stretch in this game; another sign of things to come. 13 point win over the Hornets, 4 point victory over the Cavs, 13 point win vs the Nuggets, and a 22 point win over the Hawks on March 20 would end this streak of 20 wins in 21 games.  An average win margin of 16.65 points per game during this run.  Wow.

At 50-15, the Bulls were 10 games up on the Pistons; they were 2.5 games up on the Trailblazers for the best record in the league.  A Central Division title was almost certain; home court advantage throughout the playoffs was very possible.  With only 17 games to play, the Bulls were positioned for another deep playoff run; could they take it to that next level?  If these last 21 games were any indication, the answer would be yes.  Let’s just get there.  Let’s finish strong, get to the playoffs, and get over that hump. Flexing is great during the regular season; flexing in the postseason would be better.  The homestretch lies ahead.

20-1 run is pretty damn impressive. The excitement was building no doubt, but we all knew the pistons were lurking. We knew the Bulls would meet them, but would they beat them when it mattered? Stay tuned…
