March 16, 2018: Road Tripping

Road tripping with my two favorite allies… fully loaded we got snacks and supplies… Love that Chili Peppers song.  And that’s what I was up to on this Friday.  Heading west to the land of the Chili Peppers for a day in LA.

On most road trips, I’m representing with my Chicago sports gear.  Heading to LA would be a perfect time to wear my Cubs hat with the World Series trophy on there, but not today.  No, I was only going to be in LA for about 12 hours; no time to mess around.

Well, we did go to breakfast.  And as I was showing my friend the Rizzo cake I got my wife for her birthday, the cashier asked to see.  She took a look, and said “Is that a Cubs cake?”  I knew what was coming next.  She pulled out her Dodgers lanyard from her drawer, and claimed the Dodgers “let us win” back in 2016.  Haha… I told her good luck this year… maybe this year they can close the deal.  But we both know better.  2018 is going to be the Cubs year again…

Being out in LA brought back some good memories of course.  We had a good laugh about that famous night at the Cubs Dodgers game.  I had recently found something while unpacking:  my Kosuke Fukudome headband!  I sent my friend a picture of me with the headband on; yes, I wore this same headband on that night.  I was folding my hands, bowing to everybody I passed in Dodger Stadium that evening.  Haha…  fun times.

It wasn’t so bad after all.  I guess it could get old if I was doing this all the time.  8 hours in the air in one day sounds like a lot.  That’s even more than that trip across the whole country that those east and west coast teams have to make from time to time.  That trip that a lot of teams use as an excuse for poor performance.  Not me though… I won’t use that excuse… haha.  But I’m not playing; I’m only coaching my son’s playoff hockey game on St. Patrick’s day morning.

Home by 3am, get about 4 hours sleep, then time to get ready.  I did sleep about 6 of those 8 hours in the air sleeping; hopefully I wasn’t snoring too loud.  I had the same exact spot for each of those flights… all the way in the back corner, so I could lean my head against the window and knock out.  It worked like a charm.  I couldn’t believe how packed that late night flight was back to Chicago.

But what about that Saturday floor hockey playoff game?  Let’s talk about that next.

Whirlwind day. All of the airport and flight time probably add up to the amount of time actually spent in LA. Too bad you had to be back for the championship game, otherwise a trip to the casino, a game, or a road trip to the desert might have been in order to catch the tourney games…hahaha. Yeah, the dodgers have nothing to talk about after coming up short again. The Cubs closed the deal in 2016, including smashing the dodgers in the nlcs. Fukudome headband? Wow, throwback for sure…could only imagine all the bows that night in dodger stadium…hilarious stuff. Sleeping on the plane is better than throwing up on the plane…I am familiar with both, and unfortunately for those that sat next to me, they are, too…HAHAHA.

Vegas Tip #678: Don’t chow down on Nathan’s for lunch with an uneasy stomach the next day after a night of drinking about to get on a plane. Haha…

Vegas Tip #743: if not feeling well on the plane ride home, make sure there are plenty of “throw up bags” available…or wait until after take off at least…hahaha.
