March 18, 2018: Bracket Busted

posted in: Bulls | 1

Through all the first and second round upsets, I still had a chance.  Going into Sunday, I still had 3 of my Final Four teams left.  Thanks to Loyola for knocking out my other one, when they beat the Vols.  We’ll get back to them in a second.  Then Sunday night came, and then my bracket was officially busted.

What the heck happened in that first half between Clemson and Auburn?  Yes, Auburn was one of my Final Four teams.  They were down by like 30 points at the half.  Whatever.  I still had 2 teams left, including my champion, Xavier.  Yep, I was up watching when the wheels came off down the stretch vs FSU.  What the heck man?

In all my years of filling out brackets, this has to be the worst one ever.  Yeah, yeah, I know… everybody’s bracket sucks, but mine has to be the absolute worst.  All of my upset picks didn’t pan out, and I had a lot of them… and yes, each upset that DID happen, I didn’t have.  It was a sick combination.  That goes to show you should watch at least a little college Bball before picking your brackets.

Now it’s all about Loyola.  What a story they’ve been.  I did actually pick them to beat Miami, which they did on a buzzer beater.  Then they followed that up with another last second shot to advance to the Sweet 16.  Like all other college basketball, I didn’t watch any of Loyola’s games prior to the tourney.  But I did hear some stuff on the radio.

They were interviewing their coach; I really liked what he said.  It was along the lines of “anything can happen, BUT you can’t just daydream it.  You have to play your best, and it can happen”.  I totally agree.  You can’t just wish it.. you need to go out and focus, and play your best ball, and only THEN can upsets take place.  You have to believe in yourselves too, which I think this team does as well.  By the way, their next matchup is a winnable one before they potentially play Kentucky, if they can win their game… but at this point, why can’t they beat anybody???

Yes, it’s time to get behind another local team in the tourney.  Last year it was Northwestern… usually it’s been Illinois… it was DePaul back in the day… and now, Loyola.  There have been too many times when we’ve had NO horses in the race.  The most attention we get at tourney time is if a round is hosted here… and when we hear all about these Chicago kids playing with another team.  It’s good to actually have a team in it to create some excitement.

And then there was that 16 seed beating a 1 seed… I picked one of those this year, just the wrong one; I knew it was bound to happen eventually.  But did you see that second round game between UBMC and Kansas State?  Talk about an ugly, ugly game.  And THEY beat Virginia?  Wow.  Anything CAN happen when it’s one and done.

I remember there being a Sweet 16 pool where you fill out the brackets again, with the 16 teams already in place.  I feel like I need to do something to redeem myself.  Or maybe I should just chalk up my losses, and enjoy the rest of the tourney.  It has been crazy… there is no other time of year quite like it.  I love March Madness.  Go Loyola!

March Madness usually has its share of upsets and buzzer beaters, but this year just seems different. Maybe because of the fact that a #16 seed finally beat, and I mean crushed, a #1 seed. Maybe because 2 #1 seeds, including the top seed overall, could not even make it to the sweet 16. Maybe because in the south region, a #5, 7, 9, and 11 seeds are all that is left. This region includes Loyola, our local Cinderella team, with a legit shot to make it to the final 4. Yes indeed, anything can and will happen in the annual tourney, but teams have to make things happen, not just hope and wish. My winner, Gonzaga, is still in it, but they have not looked good. But who cares, at the end of the day, get to the sweet 16 and turn things around…no more Xavier or UNC in their region. March Madness is awesome…always is. If I have a chance to make money with the zags, that is who I’ll be cheering for. Otherwise, it is the Loyola Ramblers all the way to San Antonio! RAMBLE ON!!!
