March 20, 2018: Hard Times

posted in: Blackhawks, Bulls | 1

This has been a rough stretch.  It’s been a long time since the Bulls AND the Blackhawks have sucked.  This will be the first year the Blackhawks miss the playoffs in 10 years; this is only the second time in those same 10 years that the Bulls will miss the playoffs too.  I guess a stretch of 17 out of 20 total seasons in the playoffs is a pretty good run.

It’s been hard to stay interested in the Bulls.  After the initial excitement of the new big 3, it has faded, as the Bulls tried their best to tank.  That hasn’t worked out as well as they would have liked, looking to be settling in around that 8th draft position.  As the season has went on, I’ve watched less and less of them.  I think the last straw was when they DNPed Lopez and Holliday, and started Cam Payne.  Yeah, he hasn’t been that horrible, but straight up not playing your better players didn’t sit well with me.  Hopefully this is a one year deal.

The Blackhawks on the other hand, I’ve watched more and more as the season progressed.  At first, it was in the hopes of seeing the Blackhawks hit their stride, go on that big winning streak, and get into playoff position.  As the losses piled up, it turned into an appreciation for this team; an appreciation of the greatness it took to win 3 Cups… an appreciation that this window may be finally closing.  I didn’t want to let go.

The past week or so, I’ve barely watched either of them.  With March Madness going on, the interest in watching the UC neighbors’ games has dwindled.  Yeah, I’ll flip to their games, but won’t sit on them.  Like I said, it’s been rough.

So since I’ve been watching less and less of them, it’s been harder and harder to write about them.  Even if I had been watching them, what can I say but the same things over and over?  At this point, the basketball and hockey season can’t get over soon enough.  Although… I was going to try to get to one more game at the UC, either the Bulls or Hawks… don’t matter.  I just feel like I have to take advantage of the dirt cheap ticket prices; one more game with my boy may be on the agenda.

Other than going to that final game or games, there is no interest left; it sucks.  It’s weird to see both the teams on such hard times, but I do remember a worse time.  After the Bulls won their final title in 1998, the Bulls missed the playoffs 6 years in a row.  During that same stretch of 1999-2004, the Blackhawks missed the playoffs 5 out of 6 years.  So 1 for 12 is a lot worse than the current 17 for 20 stretch… I guess I should stop bitching.

Both teams can conceivably be in the playoffs the very next year, and these “hard times” will be short lived; we can all hope for that.  In the meantime, it’s time to shift gears earlier than normal.  Once the Madness ends, the Cubs season will begin.  Are you ready for some baseball?

It is rough to watch your teams play when things are not going well. The Bulls have been in that mode most of the year. They will not make the playoffs nor will they tank good enough to get a top 5 pick. The Bhawks will miss the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. We saw this coming but did not want to accept it. We still were holding out hope for that one run to make a push. It never came. It is hard to accept that there will be no bball or hockey playoffs for us this year…it sucks! It sucked last year when the Bhawks were swept. All we can do now is hope for good offseasons from both teams so that this will be a 1 year blip. 17 out of 20 is definitely nothing to cry about. Just don’t make it a habit now. March Madness has been crazy and the Cubs are right around the corner…plenty to look forward to but will miss watching the Bulls and/or Bhawks in the playoffs!
