March 28, 2018: Cubs Sox Guess

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

I saw a question somewhere… maybe on Twitter.  it went like this:  What is more likely?  The Cubs winning the World Series or the Sox finishing above 500.

Picking any team to win the World Series is a risky proposition.  We know, it takes a lot of things to go right in a 162 game season to get to the second season, let alone get through all the traps in the postseason to get to the final stage.  Momentum, injuries, luck… they all play a part.  No matter how good you look on paper, there is no guarantee.  Yes, it makes picking pre-season winners easy, but when all the dust settles, it’s rarely all favorites left standing.

I think the Cubs have a really good chance to get back to the World Series.  I think they’re one of the best teams in the league.  I think they’ll be hungry, after a “down year” losing in the NLCS last year; how about that for a down year?  Yes, but the hangover was real, and the Cubs never hit their stride in 2017.  This year will be different.

What about those Sox?  Are they ready to take the next step in their rebuild and finish close to 500?  If the answer to that question is yes, then it’s possible that they could sneak in the playoffs.  Get to 500 and anything can happen.  People have compared this year for the Sox with 2015 with the Cubs.  It’s the year that nobody is expecting much… the year when the young guns burst on the scene, and carry the team to a surprise postseason appearance.  That would definitely be shocking.

But there are shocks that happen every year in sports; same goes for the MLB. So why not the Sox?  Well, their pitching will have to be one of the biggest surprises of the year.  Their hitting may not be so bad…

For the Cubs, I’m going to predict a 100 win season.  I already predicted that they would win the World Series in the last blog; I’m going to stick by that… duh.  So 100-62 in the regular season.

For the Sox, I’m going to predict 79-84.  This is a big improvement over last year.  I think they’ll be worse than that, and then heat up late in the season to get close to that 500 record… setting the stage for a run at it in 2019.

And then we can all predict that Cubs Sox World Series matchup we’ve been waiting for.  The Civil War as it will be known.  The Sox can grab a free agent or two in the offseason, and the Cubs will just keep getting better.  But this isn’t about 2019…

As far as this year goes, yes, I do think that the Cubs winning the World Series is more likely than the Sox finishing above 500.  There’s my Cubs Sox guess.  Any takers on that bet?  Let the games begin.  Go Cubs!

I have the Cubs winning the World Series, too. How sWeet would an even year run be? Or winning back to back years? Both are possible. I like the Cubs to win triple digit games…101-61. As for the sux, I think good things lie ahead for this club. Yes, it is a mystery year, what will happen? Are they a year or two away, or will they shock the world like the 2015 Cubs did? I have the sux finishing 2 games under…80-82. A very respectable season with a big pitcher and free agent short of making the playoffs. I think the sux will be in the wild card hunt until the last month of the year when they run out of gas. It would be aWesome to have the Cubs and sux make the playoffs. I can’t imagine a World Series between the 2…talk about a civil war! Enjoy the hope that comes with opening day, and welcome back baseball…much needed in Chicago! GO CUBS GO!!!
