May 4, 2014: Better Late than Never

So it took a month, but the Cubs have finally won their first series of the year, and it couldn’t come against a better team.  Actually, they’re in the midst of a 3-game winning streak, as they go for the sweep on Sunday night vs the Cardinals.  After that, they start a 4-game series vs the Sux:  2 games on either side of town.  It’s a good time for the Cubs to heat up, playing the 2 teams I hate the most.

Although it’s always been like that for the Cardinals, going back to when I was about 10 years old at a Cubs-Cards game in Busch Stadium, yelling at some Cardinal fans, it wasn’t always like that for the Sox.  I actually was a fan of both teams growing up.  Growing up in the Heart of Chicago, I was closer to Comiskey Park, so we made it to more Sox games than Cubs.  My dad was a Sox fan, so that contributed as well.  I’m not sure when it started to happen, but it just kind of has to be that way living here.  It’s either Cubs or Sox.  There are fans of both, but how can you be a TRUE fan of either, if you like the other.  I get it, Chicago over every other team; it just doesn’t work that way for me when it comes to Cubs-Sox.

Although I went to more Sox games, I watched many, MANY more Cubs games.  We never had cable growing up, so when the Sox went to SportsChannel, I wasn’t able to watch any of their games.  Meanwhile, with the Cubs on at 1:20 every home game in the summer on WGN, I was either upstairs by my grandmother’s, or downstairs in our house, watching the game.  (My mother’s mother, who has since passed, was born in 1920 and was a big Cubs fan; she never saw a World Series title).  Then, once they started playing each other, first in exhibition games, then in the regular season once Interleague play started, the decision was easy.  So, Cubs over Sox, but why hate the Sox?

I guess the Sox fans hate for the Cubs fuels it.  Why can’t you just root for your team without hating the other?  When both teams are in the same city, it’s just not that easy.  Going to a Sox game with my Cubs hat on became interesting.  One time, I had a girl swearing at me, talking stuff because of my Cubs hat.  I was like, you trailer park ho.  Now, when I go to a Sox game (I still go to Sox games; my wife is a Sox fan), I wear my Bears hat to avoid trouble.  It’s not like I’m personally worried, but when I’m at the game with my wife and now, my son, I don’t need to get into it with some drunk Sox fan; because it would happen, and it’s just not worth it.  I mean, they had to move the Crosstown Series to during the week, to avoid all the commotion during a weekend series.  The last Crosstown game I was at, I watched both Cubs and Sox fans, bloodied, escorted from the bleachers.  Can you imagine if the Cubs and Sox met in the World Series?  The National Guard would have to be called in.

So my dislike for the Sox is real. A team I once rooted for has now morphed into a team I enjoy seeing lose (they’re currently in the midst of a 4-game losing streak).   I did have one ounce of happiness when they won in 2005, for my dad.  That was it.  I didn’t even watch the games.

It doesn’t matter who we face in the World Series, just get there boys.  Yankees, Red Sox, White Sox… I’m going to have to be sedated for each game anyways.  I’ll probably have to take off of work to mentally prepare for each game.  I’ll be on edge the entire time, waiting for that moment… waiting to see my 1st World Series championship.  And when it happens, I’ll say better late than never!
