As the Crosstown series began this year, it didn’t seem to hold the same importance as it usually does. With the Blackhawks going for their 3rd cup in 5 years, the Bears draft coming up this week, and both teams projected to have bad seasons, who really cares about this series, right? Wrong. There may have been a low attendance at the game due to these reasons (being 40 degrees out in May doesn’t help either), and maybe a lot of people DON’T care as much about it this year, but personally, when it comes to Cubs-Sox, there is never a loss of interest.
I guess that goes for all my teams. I can’t ever imagine losing interest. Regardless of the record, and long periods without championships (Bulls 16 years, Bears 28 years, and Cubs, yeah…), this fan isn’t going anywhere. I can’t stand “frontrunners”. Those people who jump on bandwagon to bandwagon to support a winning team. Yeah, of course it’s more fun cheering on a team that’s winning… who likes a loser? But how fake is that? “I became a Yankee fan because they are so good”, or “I like the Cowboys because of their championships in the 90s”, or the worst “I cheer for the Heat because of Lebron”. I think I just threw up in my mouth… I could NEVER imagine EVER cheering for any other team than my home teams. The Cubs could go another 100 years without winning, and I would NEVER stop cheering for them. Winning a championship is of course the ULTIMATE thing with any team, but it’s not the only thing…

Yes, we all remember the 85 Bears, and yes, the Bulls dynasty was awesome, and now, we’re living the Blackhawk dynasty, and there is NO better feeling as a TRUE fan. To endure all the losing games year in year out, and go many years (the Blackhawks went 49 years before they won the Cup in 2010) without winning the ultimate prize, when it DOES happen, it makes it that much sweeter. However, there are many, MANY wins over the years that make it worth being a fan. The Bears NFC championship victory over the Saints was one of the best games ever. Yes, they didn’t win the Super Bowl that year, but beating the Saints to get there, was one I’ll always cherish. The Bulls have come short in the past few years, but that 1st playoff win over the Heat, that 3OT win over the Nets… these were some awesome games. And of course, I have never seen the Cubs win in my lifetime, but that playoff series victory over Atlanta in 2003 was pretty sweet. I’m going to go even a step further, and say EACH and EVERY victory by one of my teams is a reward. At the same time, each and every loss is painful…
I’m not going to review memorable painful losses over the years because… yeah, they’re painful. To live and die on every game is exhausting, but that’s the choice we make. In fact, it really isn’t a choice; it’s a way of life for die-hards. Like this morning, I’m in a crappy mood because the Cubs lost. I’ll be in a crappy mood a lot this year because of that. It’s especially crappy because of who we lost to. However, Hawks game 3 is tonight, and they have been the saving grace over the past 5 years. And then, the Bears draft is Thursday, and I get to scream “WHO!?!?” at the TV after Phil Emery picks another no-name. And then the Cubs game, and then… It’s the circle of a sports fan’s life. And through all the ups and downs, the highs and lows, the joy and pain, I wouldn’t trade this life for anything, and I would definitely never, ever have a loss of interest.
