May 8, 2014: Draft Day

posted in: Bears | 5

As we look forward to tonight, and to the season, I want to take a quick look back at the Bears illustrious draft day history.  I would talk about who the Bears are going to draft today, but that would be a waste of time.  I mean, who would have predicted the last 2 years, heck, most years, who we take with our 1st pick.  We always want to make some “genius” pick, instead of going with the most talented player on the board.  Sometimes it works out; most times it doesn’t.

We’re going to cover all their 1st round picks this century, starting with 2000 up until last year.  Why?  Well, because the year 2000 is a great place to start:

2000 Brian Urlacher:  Let’s be honest.  Who thought this was a good pick?  I barely heard of the guy.  We all know how this one turned out.

2001 David Terrell:  Wasn’t too disappointed with this pick, but this one turned out disastrous.  Personal favorite highlight of David Terrell:  Seeing him in a nightclub with a wife-beater on, pouring champagne in mine and all my friends’ glasses.  At least he knew how to party…

2002 Marc Colombo:  Should have worked out better.  Injuries sunk his career.  Can you blame the Bears for this one?  Didn’t he have an injury history in college???

2003 Michael Haynes:  I remember him… I really do.  Well, not much to remember him by.

2004 Tommie Harris:  He was a beast for a while, and he didn’t mind signing autographs down at Bears camp.  Thumbs up for Tommie.

2005 Cedric Benson:  Ahhh… one of the great RB picks of the Bears.  Actually, he had a pretty decent year in 2006, and I think it hurt us when he got hurt in the 1st quarter of the Super Bowl.  He and Thomas Jones were a pretty nice combo for that magical year.  Although he’s better known for his altercations with the law back down in Texas.

2006 Danieal Manning:  Not a bad pick, however, I know what my memory of him is:  Totally blowing it in the Super Bowl and allowing Peyton that long TD pass.

2008 Chris Williams:  OK, maybe it was this guy that had an injury history.  What a bum this guy was.  I remember being pissed when they took him, and pissed when the season started, and pissed when he looked lost on the field.   There is a theme here.

2009 Jarron Gilbert:  Who?  Exactly.  He was the YouTube sensation who jumped onto a table from the ground.  OK, now you remember.  Not sure if he recorded 1 tackle in the NFL.

2010 Major Wright:  Actually loved this pick.  He was average at best, and now is gone.

2011 Gabe Carimi:  I wasn’t too upset with this one.  What the heck ever happened with this guy?  I guess we should have never drafted him because he was a Packer fan growing up.  Lesson learned.

2012 Shea McClellin:  I almost threw the remote at the TV on this one.  He does have one career highlight: knocking Rodgers out for most of the season; although he came up short in that moment too.  Couldn’t he have knocked him out for the WHOLE season?

2013 Kyle Long:  I was upset with this one too, but this one has been gold after one year.  He may be a mainstay on this improved Bears OL for a long time.

2014 ?

We’ll find out tonight who will fill this slot.  One thing is for sure, is that it will be somebody we never would expect; at least, that’s my guess.  How will this pick turn out?  Do we need him to be an immediate impact type player?  I say yes, and that’s why I think we need someone on the defensive side of the ball.  I really don’t care where, give me the most talented player available on the defensive side of the ball, preferably a DT or LB or S or CB; again, almost anybody that plays defense.  Go Phil Emery!!!

    Bears 2014 Draft
I guess you can classify Kyle Fuller as an unexpected pick. Thought they were going to go safety here, but since we picked up a few in the offseason, CB makes sense. Pnut and Jennings starting for sure, but Fuller has a good shot to be the nickel corner and make an immediate impact. Onto rounds 2 & 3 later today…GO BEARS!!!

I hope the Bears get him!!! 12 punch of Forte and Hill..wow!

    18. Jeremy Hill, RB, LSU
    Hot 100 rank: 47
Hill (6-0 5/8, 233 pounds) is a big back with speed, quickness and power. He worked out very well at his pro day, looking good catching the ball and running the 40-yard dash in a hand-timed 4.53 seconds. He’s had some off-the-field troubles, but his coaches say he’s a good young man.

Never a bad plan to have that backup RB. So happy that Bush is gone… hated that guy. I think the other guy from LSU, Ford, is our backup RB right now. I read some website that has Hill as the top rated RB in the whole draft. I like “coaches say he’s a good young man”…. that’s funny.
