November 1, 2017: The Last Day

posted in: Cubs | 1

I remember many people saying that when the Cubs finally won the World Series that the good Lord could come and take them.  They would be totally fine with that day, being the last day, they were alive on this earth.  To see that finally happen, after all the heartbreak, all the years of being a die hard fan, that we would finally have the last item on our bucket list checked off… that feeling, would be unmatched.  There was nothing else left for us in this world.  We would have reached the top.  Well, the Cubs did it, and one person that said that is still here writing blogs; hopefully many more of you are still with us too.

Today is a day to celebrate one more time.  Today is the last day we can say that the Cubs are the reigning World Series champions.  The 2016 Cubs will forever be with us; nobody can ever take that championship away.  It is etched in our hearts and the history books.  And one day, we will be able to say the Cubs are reigning champs again, but not in relation to 2016.  After Game 7 is completed tonight, there will be a new reigning champion.  Game 7 huh?

Geez, can you remember how you were feeling the day of Game 7 last year?  My God…  it was like my life was hanging in the balance.  After walking that ledge outside the window through the Game 5 victory, and getting a little breather in the Game 6 blowout, what would Game 7 hold for us?  We couldn’t lose it now… not after coming back from this 3-1 deficit to tie the series.  No possible way.  This would be the ultimate of the ultimate heart crushing defeats.  It wasn’t though.  It turned out to be the ultimate of the ultimate glorious wins.

Yeah, for all the talk about how great the 2017 World Series has been (although I haven’t been watching, it certainly appears to have been a doozy with one final chapter to write tonight), 2016 will never be topped for obvious reasons.  I was right about one thing; we reached the top that day.  I was wrong about another; there is much more left for us in this world.  I’m glad the good Lord didn’t come and take me that day.  I hope there are many, many days before my last day.  Still so much to do… still so much to see.

In Cubs terms, we want to see it happen again.  We’re not greedy, but with the team we have, and the drought we endured, aren’t we entitled to a few of these titles?  I think so, and like I’ve said many, many times before, I think we will see that.  But nothing tops that first… like the 85 Bears, the 91 Bulls, the 10 Hawks, and the 05 Sox, the 16 Cubs are the gold standard… platinum even.

I put on my 2016 World Series champions hat today.  I’m wearing my W shirt as an undershirt today.  I will enjoy this last day as reigning champs.  Although it won’t be today, I look forward to the next time we can raise that trophy… the next year we can enjoy that reigning champs title.  I will always cherish the 2016 Cubs.  No baseball team can ever top what we accomplished.  Whether it’s the Dodgers (hope not) or the Astros who pull it out today, it will pale in comparison to what was going on about a year ago.  Go Cubs Go and always fly that W!

Pretty crazy that a year has come and gone. The World Series champion Chicago Cubs are no more. There is a new champion, but the 2016 Cubs will forever be the greatest Chicago title team! On the 1 year anniversary of game 7, it is hard to think back to things leading up to the game. I think I was just trying to keep busy hoping the day would fly by until game time. A nail biting W in game 5 thanks to Chappy! A blow out W in game 6! Both led to game 7…Kyle vs kluber. Would the Cubs win 3 straight to get the title and signal the end of the world? Or would there be more heartache for Cubs nation? As Dex led off the game with a home run, it felt too damn good, just like it did when Hester returned the kick off in the super bowl vs indy. Were we being set up, too? As the game went on, it just seemed to be the Cubs night…until the near fatal blow in the bottom of the 8th. Was this really happening…again? Why? As I tried to throw a few books through the floor and then went to work on pillows and a bed, things seemed to be slipping away. All the heartache from previous years and teams rushed back. Thankfully, the Cubs made it through the rest of the 8th and 9th, as did I. And then, the rain delay! A much needed breather for the Cubs and myself. As I paced outside in the rain, I was consoled and convinced to crack an old style when the game started up again. The rest is history. The Cubs became World Champs! What a glorious feeling! One that I hope to experience again, not just with the Cubs, but with all of the Chicago teams. Who will win one next? To be determined. Until then, and even after, I will forever bask in the glory of the 2016 Chicago Cubs! GO CUBS GO!!!
