November 18, 2017: Wanting It

posted in: Bulls | 1

My son has this Charlie Brown book.  He’s the pitcher/coach of his baseball team, and he has never won a game.  He talks about just wanting to know how it feels to actually win a game.  That’s where I find myself nowadays with my Timber Pups.  I just want to get one.

We got two chances to do it on Saturday.  We had the early games.  We had to be there extra early because it was picture day.  It wasn’t too bad.  Six out of the eight kids were there for the individuals and team picture in our time slot of 850.  Everybody with their black team shirts on, the other coach with his black shirt, and me, with my red Bulls t-shirt; what an idiot.  So I’ll stand out in the picture; who cares, it’s not about me.

But I do find myself wanting it…that first win.  I probably want it more than the kids.  It was clear pretty quickly that it wasn’t going to happen in game one.

We were playing the team with the kid we refer to as Baby Shaq.  I asked the guy that runs the park for his birth certificate…seriously.  Haha.  He’s like a foot bigger than any other kid.  He just stands under that 8 foot hoop and keeps shooting; when he misses he gets his own rebound and shoots again.  Then there was another kid, and actually a third kid; this team is loaded.  It was a bloodbath.  I think we did score one basket, but we still lost by 20. Chalk it up…on to the next one.

I’ll never forget that feeling when my son made his first shot.  I’d like to think he won’t forget it too.   The second game was someone else’s time to make their first bucket.  He had been close a couple times; he finally did it.  His first points of the year gave us our first lead of the year…seriously.  His second bucket, yeah he made another, tied the game at 4; that’s how it stood until the start of the 4th quarter.

Before each game, between each quarter, and after each game, we all put our hands in the middle, and do 1, 2, 3 and say something.   Timberwolves, shoot, rebound have all been used repeatedly.  Before the 4th quarter, I used one that I hadn’t used before; win!

They made the first bucket of the last quarter.  They made the second bucket, and the third bucket.  Finally, we made another shot; 10-6 was the final.  We had come up short once again.

It was our best game of the year.  We scored the most points of any game, but more than that, kids were diving on the floor for the ball; they were flat out hustling.  We had a couple kids even get hurt.  Did they actually want to win this one as much as I did?

At the end of the day, it’s not that important…not at this age.  Having fun is, right?  Well, after the game, I told them I was proud of them.  With an off week next week, we only have one more regular season game left…against the same team we almost beat.  Will it happen?

Wanting to win is the reason to play the games. Yes, at this age, kids need to have fun, but there is nothing more fun than winning. It is not fun to lose. Needed somebody to body check baby shaq or hack-a-shaq him all game. Glad to hear the 2nd game was close…sounds like the kids are getting better. Hopefully, that W comes in the last regular season game. Keep those kids hustling…and shooting!
